The Audience In Their Mugs

The coffee house my hideout,
the brewers lane my country
and the avid addicts my fellows.

Listen, ye, while I recite my verse
and you can drown the sound
with your own lapping, if it is not your cup.

If you do enjoy, let it roll about your tongue
you who value the diluted bean
over wine of the highest vintage.

Let me speak, let me quote, let me muse,
let my words be your rhythm
reminding you when to breathe and when to sip-

until once again I am finished
and have not a phrase more to utter
and your mug is quite empty,

and we both must face again the world without stains
of coffee, of poets, of me.

Author notes

Much easier to post than IM.  Please, feel free to work on me with this poem.  Including the title- it is one of many I have suggested for this writing.  Good luck on your coffee poem rampage.

I regret I have no or little stories about coffee... I don't drink it myself, though I did crash my car on the way back from a starbucks.  Does that count?

I don't think there's anything sentimental about this poem and just recorded it over at my acidplanet account. www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=844247&t=158 See if it reads like you imagined.

Coffee sentimentality I like this. I like this and that the last two line hold power over the entire poem... This one is worthy of the stains that it leaves with the words... like one cup of coffee of a thousand that is memorable

    s and best wishes.. ~genie~

First off, congrats on the bronze. Really sounds like you love coffee. I liked the second half better. Nice tribute to coffee.

Congratulations on winning bronze in this contest. Too bad you don't drink the stuff and can get the feel and the taste of it on your lips, tongue and mind. It's marvellous....

Ah, very charming indeed! This reminds me of a guy, an actor actually Viviek Anand Oberoi who was called Kisna in a movie by the same name and whom I really fancy. I loved the first 3 lines of your poem a lot. Beautiful beginning! I enjoyed the imagery in the remaining lines.

    Best,
    Charishma
