Unity

You’re standing with me
at the alter of love
Your face is flushed red from the pain
But I see the light shining, for me in your eyes
As the preacher says “husband and wife.”

I’m helping you bathe
or hooking you up
to the IV each morning and night
I know that you’re hurting, but you manage to smile
and tell me “It will be all right.”

I sit in the hospital holding your hand
waiting for you wake up
Eight times in three years
I’ve done the same thing
Through each surgery holding my breath.

You’re holding me tight as we kneel on the floor
The doctor just called with the news
Five years of trying
Four embryos grew
but somehow the cycle still failed.

I’m wrapped in your arms
as we dance on the grass
the sun riding high in the sky.
You whisper I love you and I always will
I kiss you and know you’re my life.

Unity is much more
than roses and wine.
More than someone who loves when all’s right.
You are my soul mate, my heart and my strength
and nothing will keep us apart.

Author notes

Unity is having someone to prop you up when you don't have the strength to stand on your own.  Patricia Gibson-Williams

I dedicate this to my Joe who isn't afraid to lean on me or to let me lean on him.

I think this is a beautiful piece. Unity is more than just good times. It goes back to the wedding vows of for better and for worse. Being there through thick and thin. I am happy for you that you are both there for each other.

    honest

this is a wonderful tribute to real love. my late husband was a real lover...by that i mean he was willing to help me take care of my very sick, bed bound mother. When he was sick before he died, i tried to do the same kindness for him, bt i'm sure that i failed.the point is,as you stated in your poem, real love is not about wine and flowers. it's about sickness and health.
