The Stare

Stare

The battle raged all around
But my mind it wondered
To another place in time
A day without this thunder

I did my job I fought, I killed
I survived another day
I see the dead in my sleep
Their lifeless bodies stare

Soldiers learn to move on
But it’s all an appearance
For their heart carries all the weight
Of everything they’ve done

Stare
I haven’t had the misfortune of seeing the body of someone I killed; I
hope I never have to face, that face.  But I talked to a soldier
that told me about a day that he looked a man he had killed in the
face.  I would mention his name but he asked me not to.  Imagine
living with that in your mind for the rest of your life.  I hope no
other Soldiers and Marines will ever have to face this terror
again.  My heart goes out to all of those that have looked death in
the face. On a mission in Mosul one night a group of Soldiers and Marines where
attached by a group of insurgents.  Like good Soldiers and Marines
they fired back and won the battle.  This night the Americans were
lucky no one died on our side.  When the Soldiers and Marines went
to clean up the dead insurgent’s one of the Soldier’s found an insurgent
still alive.  He called for the medic but the insurgent died
in front of him.  He saw the man grasp for his last breath.
He told me he had been pretty pumped up and excited when the battle
started.  He also said he was so excited and happy when the shooting
stopped.  He knew he had hit this one insurgent so he ran over to
take his weapon away.  He said the sight of the dying insurgent took the
wind right out of his sail.  His stomach sank and his heart started
beating real fast.  Reality is not always a good thing.  He
told me he still sees the insurgents face in his dreams.
There are a lot of Soldiers and Marines who will have to live
with the things they did, in the name of their country.  Soldiers
and Marines that did what America asked of them.  It is the fault of
the American people as much as it is the fault of these Soldiers and Marines.
It is the fault of the newspaper reports for fueling the flames, by
telling stories that make the soldier look bad.  The reporters for
telling stories that have not been verified.  Anytime the news
reports anything, that can make it look like America supports the
insurgents or anything that makes our soldier look bad.  I have no
problems with the news helping to weed out a few bad apples.  But
the news doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to holding
back bad stories about Soldiers and Marines.
It is the fault of the politicians that sent us here and those that give
the insurgents more fuel to add to their hate.  It doesn’t help
that are leadership fight over the smallest of things.  There are
times that I believe some politicians are working for the
insurgents.  What happen to admonishing senior officers in
private?  The lives of Soldiers and Marines should not be used for
political gain, period.
What happens here is the responsibility of every American.  But it is
not, the Soldiers and Marines fault.  The Soldiers and Marines are
doing what their country is asking them to do. The Soldiers and Marines
are heroes.  We as a country must welcome back the troops and

tell them how important their contribution to America has been.  Help
them to fight there demons.  Don’t let the Soldiers and
Marines fighting in Iraq, face anything that resembles what happen
in Vietnam.  We as a country must help the Soldiers and Marines get
over, waking up looking at those faces.

I first read this in your book, and God it tore me up, I feel for these soldier and the torment of their souls, I know it is a matter of survival when you are in war, but it still touches my heart to know that our boys are still human, and not the cold calus shitheads the news trys to portray them as. Soon I hope all will be returning home and I truly pray that all these soldiers will find the support that they need to heal when they return.

Like you their are days I hate this war and days I absolutly positive we did the right thing, Forget about the Oil the WMD and you are still left with a large amount of opressed people suffering under a leader that killed them at will, Don't be surprised to find that it is those same people that are still killing their fellow country man. If yoiu get a chance read some of my other stuff, I express differing opions, mainly because I feel differently on different days. That is mainly due to what I see or hear from soldiers. THis poem was meant to express the lack of joy a soldierr gets from killing. It may look good on TV be it haunts their memories for a life time. Let's just hope know soldier ever has to kill again.

Before I otherwise comment, I should begin with this is an emotional and well thought out write and well worth the read.

Still, every day babies are born everywhere, most hopefully are loved by their mothers and dads. They learn to walk, talk and play. They're inquisitive and happy and want to be big and strong like their moms an pops. They love, receive love and give love. Most like puppies and small animals and they want to explore most of all.

Flash forward 10 years to a friend's enclosed porch... there are thousands of dead ants most black and a very few red on the floor every morning their corpses deliniating neatly formed battle lines and tactical incursions but an old broom and dust pan sweeps them all into the same trash. And a child wonders.

Forward 5 more and Vitnam... soldiers, Government forces, gooks, communists, Tet, VC, B52's, naplam, all seem strangely important, as does freedom, courage, pride, honor and commitment. Then helicopters pushed from decks, change the channel it's all over. Dig a ditch, build a wall and record the names. Next!

Flash forward to freedom fighters in the jungle and fundamentalists in the desert and hostages... All so important then in other news... the local dog show judges were bribed.

Flash forward again to the Federal building and world trade center, first and second attack, the pentagon and the airliners... Watching the smoke rise from lower Manhatten before me on a cloudless day in the distance. Dread forever frozen in time.

    Flash forward to Oil...

Flash back to red and black ants, a broom and a dustpan and babies again... dead babies and babies killing babies.

I suspect I'm going senile, I used to know why red and black ants killed one another. And I knew why babies had to grow up and kill and die. And why ideologies were most important. And I remember that terms like government forces and insurgents seemed important once. And somehow I recall that the Middle East seemed important to the Brit's once and Darius and Alexander before them all bought and paid for it with blood. And yes oil heats my home, I'm pretty sure I still like heat in the winter and gas for my car. Still somehow, something about babies feels more precious in my advancing years and the red ant - black ant - dust pan correlation seems ever more ominous. 'So I can't help but think "mother's babies" when I read the words "insurgents" and "marines" and "soldiers", and I know your using the terms correctly and still I'm softly saddened.

Judgments? Conclusions? Answers? Opinions? Likely mine are no better than any other's, just thought I might share a few feelings and an remeniscences you inspired.

Best wishes for peace and for your safe return home.

    Rainbows,

    ~RJ~

HERE!!! HERE!!! I wholeheartedly agree. This is a great write.
It is still surprizing to me how many people out there just don't "get it" when it comes to fighting wars. Nobody likes war, nobody wants war, only a psycho wants to kill people but if we think we can just sit back and leave everyone else alone, and they will leave us alone we are dead wrong. Our enemies will bring the war to us anyway. There are a lot of people out there who want to kill Americans because - just because they are Americans. I am personally grateful to all those who have volunteered to put their life on the line for their country.
I too am sickened by all the political propaganda and, what I would call treasonous reporting by both the media and political parties. It seems that most of the reports make the enemy look good and the U.S. soldiers look bad. Disgusting!!
Thank you for the good poem and comments.

Anyone that can face the day to day life of war needs to be treated with the highest of respects. The poem was great the true facts afterwards were better still keep fighting your beliefs

Perhaps you should have thought when you signed up for the Army that there was just a chance you might be called upon to kill people? If you didn't wish to kill, then why sign up? Blaming politicians is a bit like training to be a chef but blaming the hotel owner for making you work in the kitchen.

wow - such tragedy - this piece is written well and full of the true dread and pain of war. It brings me to question - why, when we have an entire planet providing enough for everyone to live well, do we fight in greed to horde more ourselves at the expense of others ???
