Man the cannons, cock the guns!
Fire and stone and arrows among
And away! We play, we prey, we fall
We soulful soldiers, each and all
To writhe and cry and sigh and tilt
And stick the sword from point to hilt
The flesh will crawl and mourn and weep
And rip the soul in wake and sleep
My life, my life, all cracked to break
I flee in fear for living's sake
For one had come 'neath guise of love
To sculpt my soul from its form above
The pain that breeds in sight of him
Who blurred the line 'tween love and sin,
Which wages wars in what was pure
And trips the light that comes no more--
It's with this foe I've battled thus
In wind and rain and dark and dust--
To break the waves of salt and shame
And shun the shore of sacred name
My life, my life, returned will be
I'll wrench my eyes from reverie
And I'll declare my victory
My soul at last breathes free...
Author notes
I wrote this on September 26, 2001, for English III AP. Hooray for high school! I think its hard not to be emo and dramatic then. I think I was responding to the breakup with my first boyfriend. Not typical for me today but I had fun with the rhythms and sounds. :-D
