Within Filth

Within filthy muck

squirming tadpoles grow beneath

red lotus blossoms.

Author notes

The lotus is the image of buddhist perfection (ie. The Lotus Sutra) for it rises from out of the most dank and putrid of waters to become a stunning graceful flower.

However does a person write a haiku? They are all brilliant and I have not tried one because I can't fathom writing anything good in so few words! You did it and others do it and what the heck! I'm gonna try! This haiku is just wonderful.

This haiku was beautiful and packed with imagery. You kept up the traditional 5-7-5 syllable count. The piece flowed and the words were not at all forced to meet the syllabic(right word?) count. Thanks for commenting on "George Bush as Satan" and keep up the great work. Also, I wish you the best of luck in the contest!

    dear barefoot,
what a delightful poem you wrote! it is full of life and full of wisdom. on one hand, the scenery of nature can be imagined in detail, and at the same time, a spiritual lesson is told. it is a lesson that filthy muck serves as the base and fertilizer of many life forms. a lotus flower has its roots deep inside the mud, while striving towards the light where its beauty is revealed ...
    how enchanting.

    Beautiful work!

Very well done! I like the imagery put into this haiku! You leave the reader with the image of the beautiful lotus instead of the image of the filth... nice touch... Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent! Best wishes in the contest! Debi

    excellent

hi barefoot - i love the juxtaposition in this evocative haiku between the dirty mud and the beautiful flower. having the growing tadpoles as the middle image implies growth & continuity.

a lovely haiku, subtle and beautiful and wonderful.

i hope you do very well in the contest with this excellent haiku.

best wishes on your barefoot haiku path,
    myron.
