Survival

Laying in my trailer
I’m surprised I don’t have wings
Time to take a shower
I guess I’ll grab my things

I’m walking out the door
When the TV turns me round
I sit back down to watch a show
When the first big boom comes down

The second hits not far away
I jump down on the floor
The third it hits right where I’d be
Had I walked out the door

I guess my life’s not over
I must have more to do
I am a different person now
I just wonder who

Author notes

God and Angels

I sometimes wonder if Star Gate: The Series saved my life that “holy cow” day in Mosul. There I was walking out the door, about to take a shower.  Had I walked out the door I would have been dead.  I had my shower stuff already.  Then star gate came on TV and I turn around sit down on my bed and start watching Television.  I’m still alive because of a television show.  One minute here or there.  Somebody was watching out over me that day.   Thank You.  I was in shock for several hours after the mortars hit and finally some of the guys from work said you had better come down to the palace.
If you give Satan credit for scaring the hell out of you, then you have to give god credit too.  If you’re still alive then there is always a possibility that god or a guardian angel was sitting on your shoulder.
I stayed in the palace for over a month after the blast. Not too soon after my close call the chow hall got hit at the airport in Mosul, I was at the palace almost twenty miles away.  My boss realized I was still very shaken even a month later and he gave me a different assignment to a safer base.
I will say, my view on god and heaven have changed a lot since the day in Mosul Iraq.  I believe in miracles.  I believe in God.  I believe in life after death.  I’m not sure what form it takes but I believe there is sometime out there.

This is good, not what I had in mind for the contest though as it focuses more on you, how you survived it and how it's changed you, than why you believe. It flows well and I'm glad that you were saved that day, but try constructing a poem with what you put in your comment box as that follows the guidelines more closely and alone would make for the kind of poem I'm looking for.

I must applaud you.. Instead of taking almost losing your life as something that you did, you gave god credit. Many times we credit God for all of the wrong doingings in our lives. But very seldom do we stand up and tell God what a blessing he has given us this day. Thank you for making me turn the mirror on myself, for I have not seen what you have seen and take the small things in life for granted!

    WONDERFUL POEM

A very emotional write you have penned. Wonderful imagery of stark reality of war. I think we all have things happen in our lives that we can look back on and say God was watching out for me that day. I was almost electicuted and thought I would die. It wasn't my time. I am glad you were alright. I shall keep praying for you and all our guys who do so much over there with very little thanks. God Bless you. You stay safe over there. Sandy
