Birth of Freedom

Birth of Freedom

I wasn't’t there over 200 years ago
When they signed the Declaration and America was born
I wasn’t there over 100 years ago
When they signed that proclamation
and they sounded that great horn

But I was there just the other day
At the voting booths: there was magic in the air
Now freedom rings in Iraq and I was a part of that
I watch proudly, as so many faced the dare

I’m proud to be American
Spreading opportunity in what we do
I’m proud to be American
Where dreams still can come true

These dreams aren’t ours but are now Iraq’s
Let’s see what they will do
They’re proud to be Iraqi
Where dreams are coming true

Author notes

We forget the cost of freedom.  It has been so long since America became free that we think it all happen over night.  It didn't it took us years to write a contitution and almost a 100 years later we final freed the slaves and another hundred years before we STARTED the civil rights movement.  It's happening in Iraq, it may take a little longer but it is happening.  I had tears in my eyes watching the Iraqi's vote.  I am so proud of them.

well sir your poem was quite well written and the emotion you expressed in them are quite real ..though i may sit on the prosecution benches when the trial for American invasion of Iraq is brought to realization buit i am much impressed by your views about the cost of freedom , how differently we may interpret it but its true , nations are not made in a year or ten its a long process takes a lot of courage and sacrifice and Americans have rendered sacrifices so yes well said

This poem is grand and terrific. The idea is really wonderful and important for all Americans. I know I will remeaber the cost of freedom because my Uncle is in the army. Though he has not been to Iraq. I try to reamber to be thankful everyday I'm an American.

I really hope great things are happening, and that you are safe. It takes a lot of courage for all Americans to be where you are. My feelings are very mixed, but the one thing for certain is that I want everyone of us home and well. Take care of yourself. Your poem is lovely and full of inspiration for many!

This poem is a great one. A great perspective seeing the situation in Iraq to that of your home. Let us all hope it won't take as long to fulfill their dreams of true freedom.

Excellant poem babe! Some of us do forget the cost of freedom. Glad things are slowly getting better for the people there. My hubby told me stories about how they live and showed me pictures and it just all blew my mind. just stay safe and be good.
