When cuts and bruises crowned each little hand,
When grass stains graced the top of youthful knees,
When finger-people plays were something grand
And dinner milk revealed the sunken peas,
When, with our noses to the wall, we stand...
So many thoughts of Mom the memory sees.
When visions of this precious woman stir,
I always stop and thank the Lord for her.
With loads of laundry piled up to the sky
And dishes that were never completely done,
There were some times that mercy let them fly
So we could have a little family fun.
And though she OFTEN gave a heavy sigh,
She cuddled, hugged, and kissed us every one.
These kinds of thoughts are special to a kid-
Her best she gave in everything she did.
And when the sorrows came as we all grew,
She went beyond to show her endless care.
How many tears were shed when not in view?
Unnumbered are the lovedrops gathered there.
Through heartbreaks sore, we oft discouraged you,
And yet you always turned to God in prayer.
Yes, YOU'RE the mom God gave us for our best,
And with your love, we'll be forever blessed.

Author notes
My mom has been through so much... as most moms have.
My dad didn't have a steady job when they first got married. She miscarried three babies before she had my brother, who was born with deformities in his leg from cerebral palsy. Then she had five girls right in a row!
My dad would get laid off of work all the time. We barely had money for food at times. My mom did her best with whatever she had, and hardly ever felt loved for it.
Later, when we were all teenagers, three of my sisters decided to run away or leave home at an early age. My mom was crushed by this, and to this day thinks she's a bad mother.
We're all grown up now... My sisters are all married, or have children, as well as my brother. Most of them live out of state, so she rarely gets to see her grandchildren.
I just wanted my mom to know that she is wonderful the way God made her, and that she did a GREAT job with us.

This is a great poem. Thanks for letting me know about it. I'm glad your mom was blessed with a son and five daughters after the pain of those miscarriages. I love happy endings. I'm sure you've all made her very happy over the years. I'm sure this tribute meant a lot to her.

I really enjoyed your poem about your Mom! I could write pages upon pages about my Mom, but instead I tell her all the time how I love her! Great memories have been captured in this beautiful piece...cherish them always! I especially loved the sunken peas in the milk...mine would have been the same or lima beans. However I was able to swallow the lima beans whole never having to taste them! Thanks for sharing this! God bless! Noble1

I think you hit the many thankless task that a mom does daily as well as some of the more difficult heartaches a mom faces. Nicely done. I hope you share this and your comments with your mom.

Excellent
heismysong, This is a wonderful tribute to the loving, selfless person that sacrificed her own wants and desires to tend to the needs of her family. Good Mothers are a reflection of God. Excellent write and your author comments were appreciated. Peace unto you my friend, Dennis

I was just thinking about my mom and it kind of dawned on me that she desires something nice, so this contest is dedicated to her. Good luck in the contest! ~Holly

A very lovely poem. A mother myself, it made me reflect on my mother, and my relationship with my children. I am unfamiliar with the "proper" ways in which poetry should be written, but I'll say you did a wonderful job in expressing your feelings and thoughts about your mother.

Tear Jerker
this is beautifull. i'm almost crying, but can't do so since i'm at the library. it's great you can dedicate something to your mom. sadly, i didn't grow up with her, so i can't relate. but this sort of helps to realize what it might've been like if i'd had her. this is great!!!!

I appreciate the comment, and I do understand the bit about dropping out the letters. I only had one day to write the poem, however, since Mother's Day is tomorrow... and it can be VERY difficult to find just the right words! I hope I'll be forgiven for that.

Well, there's really not much to fault it for. The images used in the poem are a bit cliched, but I think here that kind of works in the poem's favor. It adds to that sort of syrupy sweet kind of nostalgia the poet seemed to be trying for. So, well, in that way I would say the poem is a success. The only problem I have with it is where letters were omitted in some words in a few of the lines. Like, mem'ry and ne'er. It has always bothered me when poets do this. To me, it has just always seemed that, if you are going to be that concerned with holding up the form of the poem, then perhaps it is worth the extra effort to rephrase the whole line rather than resorting to dropping letters out of words to cut them down and make them fit the space in the line. Anyway, that doesn't really detract from the poem as a whole though. Just merely something that bugs me for some reason. The poem works regardless, so it was only worth mentioning as a personal aside to this comment. Overall, fine poem.

Your poem plus your author's comments have made me teary eyed. You've described your mom so well, that I feel as though I already know her and can see we have many things in common. I would justify not getting my housework done by reasoning to myself,my kids are only little for a short time and housework would always be around.
I can only imagine how hurt she was when you girls left home-it was only natural that she felt like a failure-I think we could all join her with those thoughts, me probably more than most.
You have given her a lovely gift here-bringing her honor. I'm sure she would need a bucket full of tissues to make it through-but that is good b/c tears often bring healing.
Best wishes in the contest~
Happy Mother's Day to you, too.

Awww! How sweet! My favorite is the first stanzas:
"...When cuts and bruises crowned each little hand,
When grass stains graced the top of youthful knees,
When finger-people plays were something grand
And dinner milk revealed the sunken peas,
When, with our noses to the wall, we stand...
So many thoughts of Mom the mem'ry sees..."
Nice poem. -

I feel like I'm a very loving soul- my mom has been through so much. I just want her to know that, deep down through all the rough exterior (at times), she's a great mom.

Hello heismysong,
These words fall from a beautiful loving soul. Your tribute to your mother is very touching and makes me sit back and think of the CRAZY, MEAN or just totally STUPID things that my mother would deal with, of course due entirely from her children. Including a very loving, possessively holding husband. IYou've made me tear for her. She just seemed to have it hard. Never abused by anything but the ones she loved most. The older I get the more I value who she was. Thank you for placing this poem here to be read. You are very talented.
EXCELLENT!!!!!

A lovely tribute to your mom. Funny how when we grow up, we begin to see what was right in front of us throughout our lives. You have so nicely penned your love for all your mother has done for her children. She is lucky to have you! Happy mother's day to each and every mother God created. Peace be with you.

LOVE it! good job. I just love it and I can tell you love your mom through your writing!

Yup its all true... I can vouch for the Mommy. She is my mom and well and this poem displays her perfectly. My favorite part is the fingerpuppets because I remember making them and mine was a queen. I remember trying to do a skit with Fingerpuppets. LOL Mom was cool... you should have added the TPing. That was really fun. But through it all she took us to church, she made sure we were in school, she loved us and showed us how to love the Lord. Great write Nat.
Because He Lives,
Beka
