Iraq and Viet Nam

I was in Viet Nam in '67 and '68
I learned much of other cultures while there
With Vietnamese I walked and talked and I ate
For those people there, I came to care

It was their Civil War, like the one we had had
Plus we were last of three groups to invade
They beat back Chinese, which alone was bad
But then an invasion by Japanese was made

After defeating them, they had to deal with the French
When communist Ho Chi Minh won -- Oh no! In we come
Invading them during their Civil War -- what a cinch
On their own land, against us, that they won

This war in Iraq is much the same thing
With a Civil War looming, like in Viet Nam
They want us out -- this Iraq war will bring
Another U.S. defeat -- for us it's a bomb

I don't envy our leaders the decisions they have to make regarding the best interests of our country and its safety. Your poem has a great deal of insight, and you've gotten your views across without vitriol---an admirable thing indeed! Glad to meet another poet who mourns the belittling of meter and rhyme.
