Hurricane

It comes in waves
it builds and builds
until it overtakes
everything...

Mighty wind and
roaring seas,
stinging rain
and misery.

All is dark
but heard are things
banging, hitting,
taking aim...

For hours it churns
violently...
sweet sleep come
but none found..

The wind... it howls
like a hungry wolf
taking all
within its path...

and then sweet silence...
all is calm...
the eye arrives;
peace; serene.

- It passes quick -

violence returns
trees snap and fly
all directions
instead of building ever slow...
it comes full strength
for hours on end...

slowly it fades
into nothing.... but what is left
utter destruction..

Author notes

It's here... Hurricane season... starts June 1...

The picture?  Well... that was strictly from the wind surge... it's a wall of water that comes in and takes everything in it's path...  the bar next to this apartment complex... was reduced to only the concrete surface... yes there were people in it having a hurricane party... they all died.  It's amazing... truly terrifying.. yet at the same time.. thrilling... for you know that you are witnessing just a SMALL amount of God's power...  This happened during Hurricane Ivan...

The bottom picture... my brother's girlfriend lived in that trailer...  it was between 1/4 and 1/2 a mile away from the top picture... yes.. that far away from the bay... and the wind surge still pushed the water up enough to do THAT kind of damage...  a trailer close to it was totally turned on it's side...  wow... such power... Glad I have a brick house!!!  I lost merely a few shingles on my roof and well... some large tree limbs...

    BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN MY FRIEND

Some say the wrath of God, others the power of nature but all are the wonders of the world.

    riding the hurricane

I suppose living in a place where hurricanes are common place
one looks at nature in a different way; most fear it, your nature seems to be thrilled by it,,, as if immune to it,
I don't believe any of us are , ; do be careful out there..
There is a sense of urgency in your poem, as if the expectation
of it all , the rush, then the quiet, and its deadly swipe..

You know what gets me? The multi-million dollar homes built on the beach... and then all the whining when they get wiped out...

After 'cane Erin.. there was a whole house... still intact... swept out into the bay... looked funny setting out there... the owner complained about having to have it torn down and hauled off... wanted the city to pay for it...

I was amazed that 'Cane Ivan took out our bridge... big sections of it... we were isolated for 3 days from EVERYTHING... gas, water, food...

heh... I was prepared though.. camped in my front yard... full kitchen, shower... everything... even a generator... had phone lines and even got online a little...

It took, if I remember right, 12 days to get power back where I am... talk about suffering... it was in July... no AC... you'd get out of a cold shower and just pour sweat... couldn't sleep at night or anything.. I enjoy the power I see in a 'cane... but NOT the aftermath...

"sentence longer about the hurricane building up slow, as if it is in the middle of a climax, is pretty creative. "

    Yup... twas my intention...

If you've never been through a 'cane... lemme tell you... it's an expereince... it does build slowly... until it's full fury... but after the eye passes... you get FULL FORCE all at once ... with no building up of winds...

All the trees have been bending one way... because of the winds... and once the winds change total direction... it just snaps them all off...

    truly crazy...

    phenomenal

    Another free verse. Great!

I like the short lines. They add to the tension that this write evokes. Then I don't know if you meant to, but the way you made the one sentence longer about the hurricane building up slow, as if it is in the middle of a climax, is pretty creative.

Then you ended it quickly with a short reference to all the destruction left behind.

I believe this only illustrates more your sensitivity to writing. The way you set up the write, whether intuitive or not, is phenomenal.

    Awesome!

Well done on this piece about a horrific time those in the southern states have to face yearly. Thanks for sharing! My heart breaks for the loss they have faced and undoubtedly will continue to face. Love ya! Noble1

    Awesome.

Wow Melissa! You captured the Fury in words and photos. Katrina was the worst I ever saw since the one in 1969. I think that was Camille...

It's a risk...for certain. To live in such high-risk areas...and in Seasons like LAST!

I hate loss of life, but the power of Nature? Bring it on.
    Nice job! Wow.
