I remember one day, not so long ago
I was driving a long country road (yeah we have 'em in Florida)
Radio blaring as loud as can be
Just rockin' to the steady beat
When up ahead I spotted a deer
And knew from experience, better stay clear
Laid on the horn in hopes to scare
The 12 point buck from going there
Well how was I supposed to know
The noise made him jump right in the road
So to the side I swerved a bit
For this thing I did not want to hit
But suddenly I felt this crunch
And was left with a most dreaded hunch
I stopped the car and out I got
Apprehensively looking back to that spot
What I saw was a horrendous sight
For I knew something wasn't right
There lay a whole family of road kill
Shells all crunched, guts all spilled
Six or seven, I wasn't sure
Turtles all sprawled in bloody gore
I sat on the edge of my car and sighed
I spared the deer from early demise
But the family of crawling pokes
Were smashed where my tires had smoked
I wasn't quite sure what to do
Hey! Anyone for turtle stew?

I'm glad you brought into this your own experience, we drive and so often don't consider the wildlife we encounter.
I've only eaten turtle with lots of barbecue sauce - good eating if I do say so. (most things are with enough BBQ sauce)
