"This is Celestine" (Sapphic)

I call your number and could almost hang up
satisfied by hearing your salutation
the musicality in your everyday
"This is Celestine"

Two quavers and then rippling semi-quavers
down half a tone from the tonic then rising
full of hope in a triplet trill of welcome
new and heart-warming

I think of things to say to make you answer
no matter how banal the pleasantry is
your laughing reply makes my heart-strings quiver
as though by bow-stroke

I think of long peaceful nights holding you fast
lying wide awake to hear your dream babble
making subconscious waterfall melodies
like rain-rivulets

I think of the raucous symphony of love
when ecstasy’s crescendo torn from your lips
paints orchestral scenes with primary colours
sound-splashing on white

I think of those staccato conversations
with pizzicato laughs as your cadenza
alive with flourishes and arpeggios
delights my hearing

I think of the graceful counterpoint “I do”
sung to the accompaniment of friends’ sighs
a wonderful prelude to life together
harmony of hearts

All this from your initial gift of music
your undiscovered and lovely contralto
overtones and harmonics in just three words –
“This is Celestine”

    beautiful

This reminds me of that Wallace Steven's poem about music being feeling. I'm not sure of the title, but just remember some of the lines like ' pulse pizzicato of hosanna' Anyway, this was realy lovely, Mairi, and I hope this poem served as a prelude to some sort of euphoric and euphonic crescendo with your musical muse, Celestine.

    All the best,
    Mercury Rising

Ah melodies, what better name indeed to fit a musical tribute, than my lovely Celestine. Unless, perhaps ... Melodies?

Ah, sweet Celestine! What better name could there be? It is flower-flown and rainbow lit, scented with spring flowers and there is lovely music flowing through the garden. A perfectly lovely poem!

    Bravo!!

Exquisitely lovely, beautiful, as the current cliché has it, “full of virtuosity”, it is difficult to comment upon it as any prose written about this cannot do justice to its intrinsic artistry. Superb, excellent! I loved it. Bravo!!

I dont think I have seen so many musical terms in a poem before, brings a whole new meaning to making music together, but does suggest a wonderful coda together with 'I do', a very refreshing offering, well done, Broad

Thank you so much, Toots. I have come back to the Sapphic form for this. It seems, superficially, much easier to write, being unrhymed, but as I like my writing in this form to flow and to depend on the internal rhythm of the form, I leave it unpunctuated; that disciplines me and the way I express things. Thanks for your compliments about my choice of words.

What an incredible talent you have! This poem is lovely. I will never understand how you managed to combine "hot" and "poignant" in the same poem, but you did, and I must applaud you for it! Oh, yes; I must not forget to tell you that your choice of language and all of the music references are nothing short of outstanding. Completely vivid images - exquisite form and overall message - how could this be any better? I think it could not.
