If Not For You, I wouldn't Be Me

Wondrous beauty, that surrounds me in every way;
I'm thankful to you, each and every day.
Just being you and sharing of your love,
I know in my heart, you were sent from above.

My first steps began, with you at my side;
You were my guiding hand, that kept me in stride.
Your support and comfort, through each stumble and fall,
And your kisses on my boo boos, were the greatest of all.

You reached to me, with a helping hand;
To offer support, and to help me stand.
It was just enough, for me to learn on my own;
Fear I sometimes had, but to know I wasn't alone.

Your love and patience, in everything you do,
Like when you taught me, how to tie my shoe.
You did it this way, to prevail;
To better prepare me, to walk life's trail.

By showing me the way, and holding my hand;
My wings to life, you've helped to expand.
Little by little, you slowly let go;
You knew the right ways, that helped me grow.

When the time was right, you set me free;
And if not for you, I wouldn't be me.
When your time comes, for you to depart,
You will not be gone, forever you'll live in my heart.

My advice I ask, is not to change a thing you do,
For if you did this, you would not be you.
This is my way of telling you, you're special in every way;
I love you mom, and Happy Mothers Day.

Author notes

Written May 8th, 2006 for my mother for Mothers Day. As luck will have it, I had a heart attack the day before Mothers Day and a triple bypass on Mothers Day and this is what my mother had to read while I was being operated on.

    I am surprised this has not won Gold in a "Mother's Day" contest. This is a terrific poem in dedication to your mother. This incorporates the simple things in with the overall expansion.. meaning even the smallest things in life that were done for you meant a lot, and those are the things that come from the core of a mother's heart... Just being the caring and loving person she is and having that love returned is amazing.. Not a lot of mother's receive that sort of attention anymore. I am so sorry to hear about the tragic event that happened during Mother's Day... I'm glad all is OK now. Thanks for entering & good luck!

    Driftwood this is a very nice poem that you had penned here for your mother brought tears to my eyes I can tell this was written with alot of emotion straight from your heart. Your rhythm and rhyme flowed beautifully throughout the entire poem I had written one for my mom too she is not with us no more but she still deserved a mother's day poem, you expressed your sentiments of a love from a mother to her children well done my friend you get my applause along with my standing ovation to go along with this lovely poem done for you mom

    When your time comes, for you to depart,
    You will not be gone, forever you'll live in my heart.

    aww

    This is a good poem..I'm sure your mom would love it and everything. It's out of the ordinary since you're on my friend list and i was skimming through reading poems. I hate poems that don't ryhme most of the time...I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but I can't get the speed of the poem right. This poem is sweet..you should show your mom even if you're afraid to show your poems because it's good.

    Awww....this is so sweet...I'm glad that you can put this into words to express how you feel for your mom. It's a special thing, the bond between a mother and her children, I wish I had that. Good job, and thanks for giving all of us at Ap the opportunity to read this...it really is a beautiful piece.
