Imitation is Suicide

Society is defined by its conformity;
We are continuously falling in
Making a beaten path for our selves;
How worn in these highways have become!

We live in a river
That has one current;
Fighting the flow
Is nearly impossible

Is your life defined by society?
Have you lost yourself, your dreams,
In the constant flow of the current?
Break the conformity, create your own path!

Author notes

Title inspired by "Self-evidence" by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Poem inspired by the conclusion of "Life in the Woords" by Thoreau.

When did society decide that we need to give up our individuality for popularity? So often we decide to conform rather than doing what we want. It is up to you to decide to break society's chains on you. Are you willing to make that choice?

    Yes, I meant worn in the 4th line. I also changed the line about the flow. Thanks for pointing those two things out to me. I always appreciate an honest critique that helps me grow and your's definately did that. I also found it to be very encouraging. Thank you very much

    I liked it!!

    Hi Tim, Thank you for your warm welcome! I loved reading about you and your goals/dreams. A wish that I have for my own son - He'll be 16 in a week. I liked this piece. I liked and agreed with line 1:society is defined my conformity. Indeed, isn't that society's responsibility to make sure that people conform in a manner that perpetuates it? I must confess, I am confused by the line: How warn in these highways have become. I have read it over and over, and I cannot interpret that line. I understand, how "worn", is that what you mean - or is there a meaning I am not catching? We live in a river that flows in one direction, my thought here is - do rivers flow in any other direction but one? Do rivers flow backwards? I don't know. If they don't, in my opinion, it might more consistent to say, "current" - because currents flow in differing directions, right? I see that you have used current down in the next lines, however you use constant - so, perhaps my earlier suggestion would not be appropriate. I like the ending lines that ask of the reader where they are in this struggle. A great poem that demanded introspection of my life!

    Good point. You wrote this in a way that it would appeal to everybody and that it would make them question themselves. Great job. And good choice of colors, too.

    Great job on this piece Tim! While we cannot allow society to dictate too strictly our paths...we do know someone who will hold us accountable to His standards thus having us swim against the current of mainstream society anyway! Thanks for sharing this dear brother! Noble1
