The clock strikes the hour
limbs come to life
heading toward the kitchen
a coalminers wife.
Kettle on the boil
mutton stew in the pot
fresh baked bread on the table
still pipping hot.
Tin bath by the fireside
in the glow of the lights
soap, towel, clean underclothes
Grandpa's on nights.
Back to the armchair
where Grandmother slept
waiting for the back gate
and Grandpa's weary steps.

I am pleased this bought back wonderful memories for you Renee, I too adored my Grandmother, she taught me so much that was and still is of benefit for life, she had a great influence on my life. Life back then was difficult, yet it had a beauty that I would not give away for all the world. It's amazing how some things stick in our minds, the little things that we remember with fondness and that bring a lump into our throat, ie, your Grandfather's big hands, and my Grandfather, holding his pipe with two fingers of his hand missing due to an explosion down the pit, I used to half expect the pipe to fall from his hand for that reason, but it never die, he was a wonderful man.
I am doing good here Renee, I have a problem with my back at the moment and so cannot sit for long before I have to move around, still, hopefully, that will be sorted one way or another

You brought back wonderful memories of my grandparents with this treasure. My granddad was a huge man. He was six feet , eight inches tall. All my life his hands were the biggest I've ever see, even to this day. My grandmother was a saint, soft-spoken, honesty, a virtuous woman. Someday I hope to be just like her.
This is precious. I love anything nostalgic and so, I LOVE THIS WRIT!
Very soothing to read of a calmer time in my life. It seems that things these days are not so quaint, not so quiet or tranquil. TThis poem is all thatt and more.
Beautiful!
I hope all has been well with you. I've missed your words!
Much Love,
Renee

A very nostalgic poem about coal miners in their early days
Reminders of the mutton stew and the fireside reminds me of the novels I sometimes read..today so many are losing their life in the coal mines and I feel so for the family's as this is their lives and their income....
Memories like these are indeed meant to be cherished
You captured this poem beautifully sis

Viyanna Rosemarie, I always feel there is something so very special about how life was lived years ago, I know times could be very difficult, many had much larger families than they do now, so that could make it tough. From personal experience, I have found that as I get older, I tend to think back to those special times I had alongside my Grandmother, she was a very wise woman and taught me so much that was beneficial and that has stood me in good stead as I matured in years. These memories I cherish so much and am so grateful for the special relationship I shared with my Grandmother. Even now, when things can get tough as they often do, I just think to myself, "how would my Grandmother have dealt with this, what words of wisdom would she give me to help me get past this time... these memories are very precious.

Thank you NooNiThEWitcH for reading my poem and for leaving your comments. Yes the graphic was for one of Samplette's Contests, I wrote this for that contest, then after re-reading the rules again, I realised we were only supposed to have 14 lines, I had written more... I didn't want to change any of my poem, so took it out of the contest.. I have IM'd Sam to ask permission if I can leave the graphic on there... and am waiting for a reply, if I have to take it down, then I shall replace it with another one

My Grandfather was a coal miner all his life Mal and he lived to the grand old age of 86... not bad for a man who spent most of his life breathing in pit dust and worked up to his knees in water most of the time, he lost two fingers on one hand due to an explosion, but that didn't deterr him one bit, he was still able to carry on, although after that accident, he was confined to the surface, but that wasn't until he was almost ready to retire!
I am pleased you were so well able to relate to this one

My dear Sammy, what wonderful memories we are able to tap into when we try, I have such fond memories of both my Grandparents, how different life is today from yesteryear! yet, I wouldn't trade one second of that precious time for any of the pleasures on offer today.
Always

OOH Katie, this reminds me so much of how things were at my granparents house. I come from a big mining family and your words bring back some beautiful memories. I used to love having a bath in front of the fire and grandma wrapping me up in warm towels that had been heated on the dryer that hung above the old fireplace....Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece Katie...Loved it...I do so much like it when you write in this style...Well done my dear friend....mal
