Pauvre Petit Hameau !

Etre ou non etre, ca c'est l'affaire en question:
Selon que c'est plus noble dans l'intelligence a souffrir
L'elingues et les fleches de fortune exorbitant,
Ou prenez les bras contre la mer turbulent,
Et envers et contre tous l'opposition, les dissoudre? Mourir: dormir;

Author notes

Another fragment saved from Guillaume Lance-tremulant's less than triumphant French tour. Unfortunately, Hameau was booed off stage at the Folies-Bergere....

    Cute ...

Il n'y a pas beaucoup plus que je pourrais dire. I'd say you've done a credible job with this, apart from the lack of accent marks. (I've already left a link to fix that.)

    All in all, good job.

Je ris comme une Rhône dans une trombe d'eau!

How's THAT for a pun in Frécossais?

Splendidly Franglais... or should one say Frecossais?

I note that the mortal flesh has acquired an additional "ill"... It would be an interesting party-game to guess what!

Thanks M. You'll notice I didn't try the really difficult bits that come later! I used to take parties of schoolkids to plays, and we heard a story (possibly apocryphal) that Hamlet had stopped during his soliloquy the week previously and told the front row, in no uncertain terms, to be quiet! And then he refused to turn up for the post-play discussion session with the little darlings. There's a decisive Hamlet, and no mistake. I'm awfy glad we wernae present at that one. Happy memories. Best Wishes.

No problem. (Or should I say 'no worries'?) Take care.

Goodness, Keith, it seems to me and my scanty knowledge of French that you have retained the music of this soliloquy, and its sense too. Bravo.

That'll be Miroslav Holub? No, I only know the name from school anthologies. I'll check it out. Thanks.

Hamlet "to be or not to be, whether 'tis nobler in the mind, bla, bla... but I'm not sure about the rest as I don't know the speech that well and my o-level French from over 40 odd years ago is failing me, but well done anyway!

I used to speak French fluently when I lived in Paris 25 years ago and I did understand most of it but most of all I just loved reading it - thank for the trip back down memory lane.
