I still feel the adrenaline rush.
Running across the baron fields,
Which no longer sprout grass, green and lush.
Then I wake from my dreams,
Realise I'm safe in bed.
Seven years since the fighting stopped,
But the screams still haven't left my head.
I close my eyes and see my friends.
Friends who I visit now at their graves.
No we are called the countries hero's,
But when alive, we were the countries slaves.
Men and boys stand side by side,
Waiting to fight, to rush their lives.
And for what? Is this how we should treat our sons,
And our husbands who have left their kids and wives.
After seeing all the hurt and pain,
If I ever said it was an honour, I have lied.
Although my heart still beats, I know,
The trenches are in the fields where I died.
Author notes
Hope you like this poem. I had many influences which allowed me to write this. First was my history lessons. Then was the fields I was driving past when I wrote this. (I was a passenger not the driver! lol) and then there is The Ghost Of You video by My Chemical Romance. I cry at this video but through the tears I can see it has great imagery and great emotional depth. Anyway enjoy! <3 xxx
