Julie Graduates

It's been a long time getting here,
but Julie graduates this year!
Many times I was pulling out my hair,
when school reported her not there!

She kept taking it with a grain of salt,
as I continued to worry with thought!
She gracefully took every day with ease,
as I begged her to go to school please!

Now she's just waiting to walk across the line,
as she has completed her work ahead of time!
Back in March she made me proud without fear,
as she graduated early this year!

Author notes

After missing more than 28 days of school from August '05 to January '06, she had a possibility of not graduating. Turns out she wasn't thrilled with the school she was attending and I was going crazy meeting with the counselor and getting calls asking about her where abouts. She transeferred schools in February '06 and completed her requirements by March '06. Now she's waiting (as we all are) for May 19, 2006 to get here where she will walk across the stage and receive her diploma. I was very relieved when she told me she graduated in March as I was also very proud. She didn't know the true extent of how much I worried for her to get her diploma. Many kids today doesn't think that piece of paper counts for much. It may not! However, it is an accomplishment that took 17-19 years to get and you should be proud when it happens. Most jobs require at the minimum a high school diploma. Please try your best in attaining one. Even I skipped school without my mom knowing and wrote the notes for my absence, but I did it sparingly so it wasn't obvious. In college I skipped when ever I wanted to unless a professor/instructor made it a part of the grade. Sometimes even then I skipped. I did fine in college as I was on the Dean's List many times. You have to remember in college, it's up to you to be there for no one will call or care where you're at. I paid for both my degrees as I worked three jobs going to college. This is why it's up to you to attend. You pay for it and if you choose not to go, then you're wasting your own money (unless of course someone else is flipping the bill). This is why I feel once a college student, if you pay the way you will be more likely to participate so you don't throw your own money away. College wasn't cheap then and I know it's not now. I just finished paying off my last student loan this year (but in all fairness, it was a loan working towards my third degree which is still not attained). Good luck to all of you students to graduating high school and moving on. Even if you don't go to a post secondary school, you better believe you still don't stop learning!

Joan, I do know how you feel. I was pulling out my hir most of the time through her high school years. It's like she didn't have a worry in the world, but she knew how stressed I was about her graduating. Then once she transferred schools, she finally did what she needed to do and even finished early. Once she told me she graduated six weeks before everyone else then I was relieved and very PROUD! So I do know that feeling. Thank you for all of your support, Love, Jim.
