Kids on Ice

Powdered sugar snow melted from the warmth
of my All-Stars that I slipped on hastily
due to the excitement I saw opening my window that morning.
Gabrielle was already waiting outside on the porch for me,
ready to make snow angels and eat Dr. Pepper slushies.
We walked our ten-speeds to the edge of the woods
where a bursted water pipe gave birth to our new frozen playground.
"Hey! Watch what I'm about to do!"
The famous last words I spoke before I jumped onto my bike,
rubber wheels sliding out from underneath letting
my head break the fall.
Silence and a headache.
I immediately reached my hand behind my head
to check and see if there was any blood.
The only wetness was from the ice, thankfully.
Pulling my head off the ground,
still sitting on the freezing ice,
I glanced to see Gabrielle laying face down
against the frozen rink,
with a tiny stream of blood seeping from her skull.
I told her to watch me go first.
