Melancholy Sands

Upon the sands of a melancholy heart
I stood awaiting twilight, patiently.
Reminiscent prints once in the sand
Are washed away by the salty tide.
Once upon a time, I wasn’t alone,
And your toes curled around mine.
Now dampened sands take your place
As my lips are becoming chapped…
Squinting I see your potent eyes,
As a Luna reflection in the water,
Then my soul in a blinking frenzy
Casts all notion of sorrow aside.
Pebbles tossed away by the ocean
Grovel at my feet for protection.
I surely know the fright of change
When conflict destroys a home.
Upon the sands of a melancholy heart
My hands envelop our remains.
Humming ashes to ashes, dust to dust,
Fond memories wash out to sea.

Author notes

"I can't be anybody except myself."

I couldn't deicide which option - option 5, missing someone you love or option 2, sad love, so I guess it's a bit of both.

I know you said you like things a certain way, I hope this is ok.

I said I liked things in a certain way but I would accept your poem if i ryhmed or not. This was really sad. Most of society is heartbroken and when we think back about those who we loved we feel like crap. Honest truth.

Love this one...GREAT imagery! My favorite line: "Once upon a time, I wasn’t alone, And your toes curled around mine." Sad but sweet. Thanks so much for your review of my poem. I truly appreciate that and the welcome, as well. Can't wait to read more of your work. - Kat

There are a couple of lines here I particularly loved:
"And your toes curled around mine."
    and...
"Pebbles tossed away by the ocean
Grovel at my feet for protection."
It's sad but not depressing. Melancholy. I enjoyed reading this very much so thank you for sharing.

This so sad. The imagery is very good, and your word choice is excellent.
