I watched a star unfold its wings
And fly across the sky.
It hovered near the dipper's rim
And sank to glow and die.
I wondered if the dipper might
Be filled with bubbling dew,
And if the stars would flavor it
To make a tasty stew.
I never saw my star again
For clouds like a silver screen
Covered the dipper and piled themselves
Like a throne for a star-throned queen.
But I think of my star with wings widespread
Flying across the sky--
Hovering near the dipper's rim,
Then falling at last to die.
