When I am home I can smell
Sweet pollen in the air
It takes me to a peaceful place
A place I’d love to share
But here there is this odor
A stench that’s in the air
It’s carried in the wind and dust
And ends up everywhere
It maybe garbage or sewage
Or death that’s in the air
But I sure as hell won’t miss it
When I’m far away from here
This is one of those things that you would have to be here to understand. The smell at times is god awful, I think the phrase is. The smell of the people that visit the base can make you gag. There are few flower beds and few trees.
The smell is improving, but you can still smell the stench. From the sweet smell of a Porta Potty, to the smell of raw sewer flowing along the roadside, the smell is in the air.
So air fresheners are always appreciated. Any thing that helps get rid of the smell. Some of the smells well never leave us, but at least if we have something to mask them.
After a while your senses adjust to everything. Thank God for that. An example is when I was in Afghanistan - they would set off land mines every night. The first few nights I jumped. But after a few more nights, I didn’t even wake up.
It’s funny what we can get used to. We get used to soldiers dying and Iraqis dying. I sometimes wonder: is that a good thing?

very sad
how sad it is that we do adjust to a lot of things i used to think that it was very insensitive of us but now i know it is our way of getting our minds to cope with these things that could otherwise drive us over the edge, it is crazy to think that at our senses highten when we need them and yet we can teach our senses to be selective when needed too.
it must be hard being so very far awy from home but our love is with you and we are all so very proud of you all.THANK YOU for all you do and have done,
I am happy to have given you a smile with my "banana vacancy" (which you may fill if you like)

Excellent Writing
I'm VERY GLAD you told us about this (smell). I had never heard a word about that, and I follow the news. --Ellis
