I’ll head to the kitchen and start the coffee brewing.
Tripping over shoes and rubbing my eyes,
I need at least one cup before the baby cries!
Separate those damn filters, grind up the beans,
Get me some java, before I yell at my teens.
Don’t bring me a capuccino or some latte light,
If that’s in my mug, there’s going to be a fight!
It has to be black and it has to be strong,
It needs to drip faster, I can’t wait too long!
I still can't wake up from that last silly dream,
Until some hot coffee hits my bloodstream!
Don’t try to talk to me, don’t even give me a kiss,
Not until I’ve had my morning coffee fix!
Author notes
This came to me at 5 a.m. this morning. Need I say more! LOL
Unlike many others on this site, I've never had the privilege of sipping coffee in a swank coffee house or reading my poetry there because I live in the country. There are no cool coffee hangouts around here!! The seniors gather at McD's and that's about it! But I have been known to sit quietly at 5am in the window of my breakfast nook reading my poems to my ever attentive audience of one, my baby daughter Haylee. She's the only one who ever claps when her mama's done reading a piece!

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one hanging at McD's or with a baby sipping my morning java!! Truthfully, it's probably more relaxing being at home with my daughter and my coffee quietly writing than to be in a coffee house. I'm glad you can relate! I will send you an IM with my name and thank you kindly for considering this piece for your book. Its greatly appreciated!!

(I will consider this for the collection if you IM me with your name and state or country.) Please leave this in the contest until I announce the book to ensure my easy access to the poem and to contacting you with further details. Thanks

hahaha. My first two years in Germany, Mickey Ds was about the only place I drank coffee. It was the only place with a bottomless cup around and the only place I felt at home. They had hilarious half english/ half german slogans in the bottom of the cups, which I tried collecting. I can appreciate being at home in a breakfast nook with a baby, too, since that's where I've been for the past three out of four years, as well.

please note the contest notes: "I want you to include some coffee story or mention of your favorite coffee joint (hole-in-the-wall) to spice the bio section up. Maybe mention where you do readings? In fact *you should put your story in your author's notes* NOW to boost your chances of having your poem included. Because I want really interesting author bios!"
