You can bet there is an extra charge
That hits somewhere below the battery pack
Which, of course, is not included.
Some assembly required days to complete
In blatant competition for your dollar.
Grovel before customer service in long lines of,
"I wish I had never seen the pretty box".
Music piped in and drowned out
By voices pretending to be human
In tell-tell "watch me eat your money"
Animation of self check out.
Promise and pretense in jubilance of,
"Save you all the money you are spending!" And send
Three working mothers to unemployment.

Hey hey; seems as if we are in the same contest; lol
Nice piece. You've used some very witty analogies to describe something very identifiable and humdrum- we all see it and are victims of it, lol. It's a really satisfying rant, with an excellent rhythm. Good luck!

How true, how true.
Oh how true and well I think that you hit the nail on the head as well. -
Wonderful
An honest, real thought provoking poem, it takes a specific charm to be able to turn the self check out into social commentary, and you've suceeded, bravo -
Very interesting indeed and very true, thanx for taking the time to read my poem "Waterfalls" I really appreciate it.
-
Very thought provoking and yes, I read it all, even though it didn't seem like something I'd want to read usually. Good work m'lady. Protest and rant all you wish. I love it!

This is interesting.
Boy machines seem to be taking over everything and I can relate to the message in the poem. -
This is a very well written piece! I not only like the meaning of automation that you gave, but I really was impressed with the over all voice and rhythm of your piece. You are very talented, which I am very sure you already know, but I thought you would like to be recognized for you greatness. Keep up the good work Thistle! Truly, keep it up!! And by the way, epitomy...great strong word!

well-written statement as to what all the automation really means, Thistle...not only at the check-out counters, but my biggest gripe is probably holding onto the phone after an automated voice answers and prompts me to press a ka-zillion numbers to reach to a real-voice and then disconnects me. if I ever did that in any office I had worked in, I would've been fired!
really enjoyed the read!

This sure does sound like beat poetry, Wynette. I think that the title was particularly original and good, as it makes the reader's imagination go wild and want to read more. Nice form of protest.

automation and computerisation has taken over the world but far from freeing up the human to enjoy more leisure time it has us running round at its beck and call, those people may not find employment running things over the conveyor belt and smiling at you as you hand over the dollars but they will most likely find work feeding the mighty appetite of the computers but hopefully next time people are rushing through an automated checkout they might just think after reading this, there used to be a person there..............., well done, Broad
