Horror stories are
plastered on the pages of
my history book
Questioning the humanity
of the rapists, murderers,
demons, who brought this down upon
a terrified people
Young men dying,
Viet Cong
South Vietnamese
American
It would be easier
to say that one life is
worth more than the others
But there is no truth in that path
Son, brother
Father, lover
A life gone in one note
of a bird's sad song
Even survivors are never relinquished
from this crucible's death grip
Haunted by the memories seared into their eyes
A product of the fateful meeting
of these belligerent nations
Am I more than the consequence and embodiment
of screams and death?
Author notes
My mom was able to escape Saigon five days before it fell to the Viet Cong. I would just like to say thank you to the honorable soldiers who served there and that my prayers are with you. Peace be with you

Wow, this poem touched me in a very special way as this war is also a part of my personal history... My mom was 14 in 1975, and she lived about 40 miles from Saigon. But she never talks about that time, I wish she did.
This was an excellent poem, very deserving of this trophy, although I think it is worth much more than some pixels on a computer screen...
Thanks for sharing!
Keep on writing!

Congratulations on the Silver award.
Your composition wasn't only well written, it was profound from your perspective. The concluding two lines asking the deep question made this piece a winner and your Author's notes made it all the more relevant.
Well Done!
