Jill Carroll is welcomed by Base Commander, Col. Kurt Lohide
at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, the first stop on her return
Seized in Baghdad on January seventh
By terrorists who killed her Iraqi translator
Jill Carroll, having had an experience that was mammoth
Was on her way to arrive at home later
Released in Islamic headscarf and dress robe
At an office of the Iraqi Islamic Party
Jill was moved to a fortified abode
Thankful to be free and looking hail and hardy
Relieved and debriefed, Jill could now smile
Seated in the cockpit of a C17 Globemaster
She flew out from Baghdad to Ramstein Base while
Wounded soldiers with them were getting out faster
When the aircraft landed, Jill looked bemused
At all of the cameras waiting on the tarmac
Deboarding with a grin, no autograph refused
She was just going to be glad to get back
No more Islamic headscarf and fully covering dress
She wore jeans, a sweater, and a desert camouflage jacket
Her hair in a ponytail at a distance from the press
She was welcomed to Ramstein by the Wing Commander
Col. Kurt Lohide, to a big rousing cheer
For Jill Carroll the welcome couldn't have been grander
With a tear in her eye she said, "I'm happy to be here."
--Ellis
Ramstein officials said she was taken to a hotel at the air base but was expected to leave for Boston later Saturday on a flight out of Frankfurt.

Thank you for sharing this tribute with us. I imagine it must have been a harrowing experience that will haunt her forever but thankfully she is released. Your poem does well to share this with us.

very good
This is well done. The meaning of the message outweighs the flaws in rhyming. This is a wonderful tribute to a well deserving person. I think this is very considerate and thoughtful. Thank you for sharing. Darlee77 -
Yes, I thought the rhyme was unnecessary and awkward. I enjoyed the information, however. The press seemed to stand aside as far as questions go. This is a wierd story as it has been presented. The giggling and smirking in the early photos. Then, the Laurence of Arabia get-up. There must be more but first the teasing.

Indeed... her release a most joyful SURPRISE and blessing both.

Tthis reminded me of how little hope I had that Jill Carroll would be alive and ever show up again. Iit's amazing that she did. I was certainly happy to hear of her release.

Another Jill Carroll tribute! Sincerely written, but the necessary haste is reflected in somewhat Written, naturally, in great haste... unfortunately the haste shows up a little in somewhat awkward rhyming. In particular, I found rhyming "seventh" with "mammoth" and "TARmac" with "back" less than felicitous" .. and "jacket" seems to rhynme with nothing at all.
Perhaps you could sharpen these rhymes up a little. And, if you want to specialize in topical verse, then a Rhyming Dictionary is a very useful tool! -
great stuff
well done Ellis
