Masquerade

They praised her
beauty, talent, and grace,
she was the belle of the masquerade ball.
Hiding her flaws behind this perfect face
it was not hard to believe
that the mask could not fall.
Soaring on air
she was secure
nothing was out of reach.
She thought it would endure;
her mask a wall
that none would ever breach.
But she was hiding
behind that reputation
hiding even from herself.
Until the collapse of her aspirations
when her mask fell to the floor
and her dreams were placed back on the shelf.

It's kind of creepy how when I came home I wanted to write a poem with the same title and focused on a masquerade ball.

It's funny how people think alike sometimes.
