The word can say so much about a person.
You know,
I've heard it said
That heroes are just frightened people
Who make bad decisions
At good moments.
For some,
In their eyes
That is how they might describe me.
But I'm not sure I could live up to that standard
And be... a hero.
For me,
A hero is so much more...
A hero is someone who is a friend and a confidante.
A hero is someone you can trust
And trust not only in general,
But with your life.
A hero is someone you can love with all your heart
And admire them for who they are.
She was my hero
And though she has been gone for these eighteen years,
She still is.
She was my mom.
She didn't do any superhuman feats.
She just cooked, did laundry and cleaned
Like any mom would do.
She is my hero for a number of reasons.
She gave birth to me
And nurtured me to help me grow.
She done all the motherly things.
It's all she had ever really had known.
She was a jolly old soul.
Never did I see her get down
Nor did I ever see her frown.
I did see my mom cry from time to time.
She would shed a tear or two over the little things in life.
She would get angry occasionally
Like any human would do,
But never angry enough to abuse.
She taught me more about love and life
Than any book ever could.
She was my hero.
She was my mom.
Though her health wouldn't let her do
All the things she wanted too,
She was always there in time of need.
She touched my life as only a mother could.
I miss her more each day ,
Then I thought I ever would.
She was there,
Not only for her family,
But for anyone who needed someone to care.
She had a heart for people
And animals too!
She had lots of love to share
And a lap that babies love to cuddle up to.
She was a friend and a confidante.
She was someone anyone could trust
Not only in general,
But with their lives too.
She was someone I loved with all my heart
And admire for who she was.
She was my hero
And though she has been gone for these eighteen years,
She still is.
A sweeter lady you will never find.
She was my mom.
My hero.

~Kathleen Belle Pierce Grimes~
~November 27, 1927~March 27, 1988~
This poem was written about my mother. She's been gone now for 20 years. If I were a gold or silver member you would be able to see her pic. It's her graduation pic from Greencastle High School, Greencastle, Indiana circa 1946.
This poem is one of my favorites that I have written over the past 25 years and an award winner on here. I think is well done and very deserving of the accolades it has received.
I have been writing for the past 25 years, starting in high school, but have been more serious and full time with it for the past 6 years or so. I have self-published two collections of my poetry in book form. They are available at www.lulu.com. Search for Donna Sue Grimes. I am working on a third book that is not only a collection of mine, but also will have poems from three of my friends. 'Believe, Imagine & Dream: Ramble On, Dear Friends, Ramble On'. I am hoping to have it available by the Spring/Summer of '09.
By the way... welcome to AllPoetry!

Thank you. I am glad that you liked it. It's hard to believe that she's been gone almost 20 years now. I did have her pic up with the poem, but I don't have now because I don't have a Silver or Gold membership. Maybe someday I will again.
Thanks again and good judging the contest.

Thank you once again. Yeah, mom and I were more alike than different. I miss that lady everyday. There are things that I would like to ask her about old memories and things. I should have written them down when I had the chance I guess. Take care. Again, thanks for stopping by and eading. Love ans hugs...

This is a lovely tribute to your mother. I must say that the apple didn't fall far from the tree. From reading some of your other poems, I see similarities in character. From your biography and this beautiful photo, I see the physical resemblance as well. Thank you for sharing this heartwarming poem about your hero, your mom.

Tang,
Thank you! Everybody says that when they look at me they see her. You should see our baby pics side by side. We do look alike.
It will soon be eighteen years. A week to the day, in fact. That's always a hard day for me. Take care.
