Water Flower

Water flower

Your long stems tiptoe
along the water’s edge,
      Green-thumbed hands planted you
      where the brown reeds
cannot fence you in,
And so moss clings
jealously as you pass,
      rose pink hips, turn off
      with a final swerve against
the mirrored floor of the placid pond,

A current holds you
in its arms,
cosseting you close,
in bejewelled tones,

till yet another moves you down
                  the distant stream,

through the graduated twilight,
        toward glad but anxious lees.

Author notes

Written March 18th, 2006.

To post in this contest, I had to hit the edit button to add why I liked this poem best of all my golds. And when I did that, it completely messed up the poem's formatting. So I've been trying to edit it to look the way it did. And perhaps the AP site is giving some trouble because I can't seem to get it right again! So, if you see anything looking a tad queer, that is probably why!

This is one of my favourite gold winners for a number of reasons. I love water flowers because they are not the typical flowers people think of when the word "flower" is mentioned. But more importantly, the poem is a metaphor for my own life at the time in which it was written. I had not yet found the person I wanted to settle down with and I moved through a number of relationships hoping to find that one person. It was not a case of angsty heartbreak as most people paint it. It was simply a depiction of the journey we all go through in life to find our place.

This poem is definitely great, I really like it. Great form, it adds to the poem, words flowing like a stream through the flowers it's speaking of.

    "Your long stems tiptoe
    along the water’s edge"

Many thanks for the entry and good luck!

    excellent

This is a very vivid poem, and it gives one some very deep insight what I feel is ones loss. Your talent shows and I may have concieved it wrong, but this could have a double meaning!
    write ON!......Ennovy
