Puk-Ack!!

Missing image

That Superman is one real cool cat
Leaping tall buildings and all that.
The Silver Surfer is pretty hip, too,
Making his own waves right on cue.

And you gotta love good ol' Aquaman
With all sea creatures at his command.
And Batman knows how to keep it real
Cruising 'round Gotham in his Batmobile.

I always had a soft spot for Daredevil, too.
There's just nothin' that that guy can't do.
And The Punisher makes the bad guys run.
He always knows how to get the job done.

All these guys are great in their own way
And they always end up saving the day
But I've always rooted for the little guy,
The one who never catches anyone's eye.

F'rinstance, there's sweet, little Underdog.
And don't forget about Napoleon Bonafrog.
Then there's Atom Ant and Mighty Mouse
He may be small but he's a powerhouse.

But my most favorite superhero of all,
One who answers each and every call,
One who gives crooks an awful lickin',
Is the one and only . . . Super Chicken!

Yep, he may not look like much at first
But all the thugs know he's the worst.
He drinks down some of his super sauce,
Then proceeds to let 'em know who's boss.

Sure, Superman smacks around bad guys
But he's so muscled up, there's no surprise.
They just laugh when Super Chicken comes
Until he starts high-speed peckin' the bums.

Like Batman, he has a butler and he's a millionaire
But his butler's also his sidekick.  They're quite a pair.
He's a dopey lion named Fred who makes lots of mistakes.
But working together, they've both got what it takes.

I often wonder why Super Chicken lets Fred keep tryin'.
Then again, how many chickens hang around with a lion?
Bossing a lion around never fails to impress all the hens
And it scares all the bad guys when you have big friends.

His real name's Henry Cabot Henhaus, The Third,
A pretty high-class name for a scrawny, little bird.
He's one impressive chicken, pal, I'm tellin' you!
But that's not all! He's a pilot and a scientist, too!

The funny thing is, when he drinks the super sauce mix,
He gets no superhero powers and he can't do any tricks.
He's just the same chicken, yet he always wins in the end
As he rounds up the criminals with his dimwitted friend.

Maybe that's why I like Super Chicken the most.
He isn't much to look at; he doesn't brag or boast.
But he never, ever gives up when he answers a call
Proving that persistence is the greatest power of all.

Author notes

Dig the butt cleavage on the Baywatch babe sitting behind him! Pretty racey for a 1960's cartoon, eh? lol

I started liking Super Chicken when I was about six, I think.

Sorry about the light background. I used dark letters so hopefully it's easy enough to read. I wanted the sky bg so it would look more like Super Chicken and Fred were flying. lol

Super Chicken was produced by Jay Ward and Bill Scott, the creators of "Rocky and Bullwinkle" and was one of the regular cartoons that ran with "George of the Jungle" on ABC TV on Saturday Mornings in the late '60s early '70s.

Here are the Super Chicken Theme Song Lyrics. (Try to sing it with the sound file at the site above. It's super-fast. I bet you don't get it the first time! lol

When you find yourself in danger,
When you're threatened by a stranger,
When it looks like you will take a lickin',
(puk, puk, puk, puk)
There is someone waiting,
Who will hurry up and rescue you,
just Call for Super Chicken!
(puk, ack!)

Fred, if you're afraid you'll have to overlook it,
Besides you knew the job was dangerous when you took it
(puk, ack!)

He will drink his super sauce
And throw the bad guys for a loss
And he will bring them in alive and kickin'
(puk, puk, puk, puk)

There is one thing you should learn
When there is no one else to turn to
Call for Super Chicken!
(puk, puk, puk, puk)
Call for Super Chicken!
(puk, ack!)

Such a cute write. Didn't see this show, but remember listening to Chicken Man on the radio. Great rhythm and hryme as well as some cute scenes for us to laugh about. What would we do without our super heroes?

i loved that song...it ranks up there with the theme for Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch....

i have to disagree with your choice of superheroes tho...Super Chicken seemed a bit lame to me....but hey...George of the Jungle...now there was a "hunk"...

this is a fun poem, great mood, playfully written...it almost felt like watching an episode of Super Chicken..thanks for sharing it and bringing back childhood memories...

and "watch out for that treeeeeeeeeeee....."

This made me laugh which is just what the doc

I like POPEYE & HUCKLEBERRY HOUND (if you can consider them - super heros), myself not to mention all of the sexier and sensual female SUPER HEROES - but that SUPER CHICKEN is one nast fellow that I wouldn't want pecking at me bum - if you know what I mean! An original and fun piece presented beautifully! Are you sure that you aren't SUPER CHICKEN ready to make a come back writing under a hen (I mean) pen name? LOL!!!
    Peace & Love!

    funny and cute and good!

Super Heros are every kid's heros and they know 'em all! Sounds like you know quite a few, too! This is a very clever poem and it must have bent your brain to come up with so many! Good job and I'm sure people are having fun reading this. I did!

I have no idea who most of the superheroes are refered to in this write but still found it funny.I like the qualities you admire in your all time super hero, yes, persistence gets the job done. This was well written and presented.I imagine adults and children alike would enjoy this and I like the philosophy threaded throughout, like a modern day aesops fable.Well done, good luck in the contest, love and light,Yvette
