The Blame Game

It's their fault
   She feels trapped
It's their fault
   She hurts inside and out
It's their fault
   She did it
It's their fault
   She's so weak

It's her fault
   Letting it become a cage
It's her fault
   Can't see past the pain
It's her fault
She's the one who used the knife
It's her fault
She doesn't put up a fight

Who do you blame?
When a little girl is abused
Believe she has to accept the pain
   Because everyone else looks away
Who do you blame?
When she tears apart her outsides
   To match the feelings inside
Who do you blame?
   When she doesn't trust
   Doesn't care or believe
That anyone really cares at all
Who do you blame?
   When she's just waiting
For everyone to walk out on her life
Just like everyone else looked away

I don't know who to blame
But the little girl grew up,
                                                       And she's done playing games.

Usually I would not have anything to say about a poem like this, but recently I have been making an effort always to have something to say about featured poems I click on, so that even if I don't respond much to the poem, the poet's investment of time and thought is not 100% wasted. I used to be in the bad habit of quickly clicking on to the next if a poem didn't touch me.

I can say I'm glad the poet finds some kind of resolution. The experience of childhood abuse must be terrible for the victims. I am endlessly grateful to my parents for the stability they provided for me and my siblings. At the school I work in we sometimes have to deal with abused children who "disclose". They usually move on quickly into other areas of care and I wonder about how they cope later. I hope some of them get to some kind of resolution too.

Awesome poem. Extremely emotive and captures perfectly the how those who have been victims of abuse feel as though their mind is being totured and that no-one cares or understands.
