Plumbing in old houses,
working under Bugs,
orange cats that wait to throw up
till he’s cleaned and dried the rugs,
attics far too short to stand,
fixing sewer pipes by hand,
tools that say they fit,
but don’t,
cars that ought to go,
but won’t,
thoughts that never, ever had a train
and working by dim flashlight
in the winter
on an engine
in the rain.
Author notes
My dad is a mad scientist/inventor, and when my sister and I were trying to think of something he *couldn't* fix, the only thing we could come up with is "a broken heart."
My son likes me to tell him when he's a poor baby, so Dad, this is my list of when you're a Poor Baby.

This is very charming and endearing. I enjoyed it!

Are you sure this isn't MY dad's list? Everything on here is something he hates, especially the cats (which crap on his porch).

wish i loved my dad this much

As always your work has entertained me and made me smile, this is cleverly written and very well done. I particularly like the way the last 3 or 4 lines slide together

It's funny because it's true! The magnitude of filth that comes from my mouth under all these above mentioned conditions is what makes an emarrased family retreat so I can't see them laughing at me.

I liked this--can't even tell you which part best. The ending was a vivid picture--I'm glad I know nothing of fixing engines!
What does your dad do for work, if I may ask?
