Cardboard Toy

A cardboard box is
a wondrous toy.
To a child it brings
mysteries and joy.

A house, a home
with dishes to be done,
With beds, and such things.
Will be loads of fun.

A spaceship bold,
with aliens to shoot.
Flying planet to planet,
there's no substitute.

A race car speeding
with stripes down the side.
Running each race
and winning each time.

The imagination of a child
is a wonder to behold,
with little to be had,
more wonderful than gold.

Author notes

I hope this is funny enough or maybe just weird enough.

It's so delightful that you can spend a fortune on a child's gift only to have the gift ignored and the wrapping provide hours of amusement and creativity. You make a great point here - and you wrap it up very nicely in your words.

    Merry Meet,

I"m glad you enjoyed this. I was actually think of my daughter when she was really young. She always prefered the big boxes as to the actual toy.

    Adorable

What an adorable poem! It's cute, it's funny, it touches the heart and also the spirit! As a grandma who simply ADORES her grand, I'm reminded daily of the simple wisdom and gentle freedom of appreciation that children have-we can learn much from them-thanx for writing about a child's simple joy-perhaps it will help others to remember and rediscover their true beingness...peace Good luck in the contest!
