Send in the clowns
I need the clowns
when life is drab and dreary
and these tears roll softly down
I need a clown
Let me escape
run back to the tent
the lights and applause
Where there's a good reason
to fake this smile
and the deepest sorrow
cannot endure
A clown would be sure
I try to face this act of mine
but the balls won't stay in the air
the crowd leaves the tent
the lights go out
and I try to go on with the show
The clowns all know
what it's like to be here
laughed into the darkness
but on with the make-up
on with the lights
dazzle the audience
and almost fool myself
Am I a clown?
Send in the clowns
