Lonely Soldier

A lonely soldier,
One lonely soldier,
In his hand he grips a picture,
A picture of his family.
In the other,
He grasps his gun.

He sits in the trench,
Noises explode around him.
He holds the picture tighter,
And holds his gun firmer,
He will never let go.

A lonely soldier,
One lonely soldier,
Running out into the gunfire,
He is struck.
A void of darkness surrounds him.

A lonely soldier,
One lonely soldier,
Being carried by his comrades,
To a freshly dug grave.
He is laid to rest.

A cross,
Is sunk into the ground,
Over top his head.
That one lonely soldier,
One of those many brave men.
