We stand on the brink of disaster:
when civilizations clash,
what usually comes after
is mostly one hell of a crash.
All wars fought for gold or glory
sow discord and foment hate;
like so-called "wars of conscience"
that fanatics initiate.
Some wars stem from bigotry
when cultures or races clash.
Others come from unwise deeds,
actions foolish, vain and rash.
The truth is, all wars fail
that pit brother against brother,
unless one side finds a way
to annihilate the other.
Though wars in space be deadly,
losers can flee, or hide --
no planet has that luxury,
so it mostly leads to genocide.
The results are catastrophic
when good sense evaporates --
Let's hope our galactic neighbors
have better character traits.
Author notes
Since nothing I write could be good enough, I'm posting a science fiction poem, although anybody who can think could decipher this and realize that there's a lot more truth than poetry here.
If anybody reading this disapproves of genocide, come sign the guestbook on my website against genocide:

Nobody deserves to be wantonly murdered.

Nicely done. I enjoyed the read. I love the lines
The results are catastrophic
when good sense evaporates --
Let's hope our galactic neighbors
have better character traits.
I believe that somewhere out there is another life form. I like how you cover hate and bring in the alien life form. Most likely they are problem better than us. Nicely done. Thanks for entering and good luck.

Excellent Poem - Really
Scat Cat thinks he's from Mars
Spends all night looking at the stars
But refuses going to wars
And won't ride in cars
Scat Cat will live long behind bars
(mad as a hatter)

I dont expect it will ever end, genocide that is. Another thought provoking write, and well written too. sj

You've written better, but this was easily worth the read, and, obviously, it's morally intact.
Thanks for entering,

You already know how I feel about genocide in this world. As for horus8 joke and his aunt - he deserves it. LOL.
Luckily my aunts were adorable it was the uncles one had to watch out for in my family. But back to your poem, while I appreciated the content and style, this line for me said the most:
"The truth is, all wars fail
that pit brother against brother."
Well done. -
I sure hope you are right. I wonder if man will ever evolve beyond war. Sometimes it hurts to know I am part of such a violent race...Wonderful verse. ~Pam

You are so right because genocide happens in America as well. It's been happening for centuries. I agree with what you say in your reply. The worst genocide of all is when we committ it upon ourselves by doing nothing to help others.
An excellent poem with many layers that is not science-fiction at all in my book.
The best to you in the challenge, although it seems horus8's aunt Beatrice needs to learn not to be such a mule, or is that a donkey, better yet, an ass. LOL
Much Love,
Renee

Actually, genocide can happen anywhere, any time. All it takes is a point where any one group radically outnumbers another, and feels itself superior to the one that's outnumbered. Anything can happen. When a black man is murdered in the U.S. it's probably genocide, when a white man is murdered in South Africa, it's probably genocide, when a Jew is murdered in France, it's probably genocide. Germany in the 30's was one of the most civilized countries on Earth. I don't think that even slowed them up.

I sometimes wish Icould teleport certain people to spend a week in Rhwanda or somewhere in the third world to get a clue to how lucky we are in our fattened countries. We have no fear of slaughter in that respect...I like the creativity here Helen

We would have to wonder of at the very least of horus's aunt's knee stability.Anyway, this speaks of current affairs here on earth as well.Always applies.Great write!~~~Suseann

You know the old saying? You can pick your friends, but you're stuck with your relatives.

I'm glad you think that's funny, but aunt Beatrice still tries to get me to sit on her lap. But she has a fur mole on her cheek.

But about our neighbors (galactic), some our some aren't.

I once fomented my face in a soused moose knuckle playing pin the tale on aunt Beatrice with my cousin Jesus, boy, did he chuckle.
