Every year one would arrive
whether by chance or design
always a lavender envelope
my most favorite color
days before November 11th
were spent searching the mail
Grandpa never ever forgot
And one year she came along
a girl on the card
walking through a field
all in white, hat and gloves
with dark heavy curls
to wish me a happy birthday
and I wanted to be her
We spent months searching
for the perfect dress, lacy
the perfect hat, white straw
little white cotton gloves
and sponge curlers
for my defiantly straight hair
It was to be all for Easter
best time for all-white wearing
I slept the night in curlers
put on the brand new dress
the hat and gloves
and went walking in the pasture
next to the house with Queen Anne's lace
and I was her for a day...
I only saw myself once
in the reflection of the microwave
and there are no pictures of that day
the camera had broken the month before
but I can still see it in my mind
remember the feeling of being dressed
all in white and walking
among the Queen Anne's lace
My mother cries to this day
upset that she couldn't capture
the moment, seeing me in the pasture
but it remains sharp in her memory
she says it will never fade
There are no more lavender envelopes
Grandpa died years ago
and the cards so specially kept
have been lost after many moves
but she is still here
the girl walking through the field
all in white, hat and gloves
with dark heavy curls
to wish me a happy birthday...
I see her in the mirror now
I have become her for myself
memories and images and time
wrapped up for safe keeping
all in my smile...
