Gold Dragon Necklace

Missing image

            Gold dragon necklace slender figure
sculpted curves rhythm drifting clouds of beauty
sun moon and ice spiraling through frozen fields
a heart dances gliding loving tearful bittersweet

One thousand years bright chariots winged soaring
     lengthy winters fired hearts
    courage ascending above evanescence
graced in artistry dreams of Desdemona
    charmed poised in elegance

bells ringing crisp air Lyra Angelica
     pastoral fantasias hidden in loveliness
       feelings begin cold frosty breaths
Concierto de Aranjuez weaving glassy loneliness...

         Giacomo Puccini, red violins crying
      in Lamento d’Ariane
    echoeing their songs:
   choreographed spheres solitude flying

black swans reflecting ripples on frozen ponds
    glints an exquisite golden necklace
         magic leaping East of Eden.

“This is a sport, and it is beautiful!”

Sont des mots qui vont très bien ensemble, my Michelle...

“It has always been a dream to win the Olympics!”
My beauty, these are also words that go together well.

Winning attitude pureness of heart gleaming gold
Taj Mahals, Songs of India, Neverlands
       twirling looping seasons of romance
          Andrea Bocelli

             yes, the Romanza!

"On your own" toes frozen glittering bruised freedom mastered
    curtains closing twilight gathers
   helix of memories unwillingly settles...

    ice flys anew
     tiny skates swarm
twisting winding reaching for the heavens
              where you have dwelt
                 a place you have warmed!

Author notes

Michelle Kwan, figure skating champion for many of the past ten years. The Olympic gold has eluded her. She always wore a gold dragon necklace given to her by her grandmother for good luck. She has just bowed out of this year's winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

The poem is based on her bio and on some of the musical scores and themes used in her skating programs.

"Sont des mots qui vont très bien ensemble"
translates to "My beauty, these are words that go together well."
The phrase is from the Beatle's song 'Michelle', after which Ms. Kwan's parents got the name Michelle!

and finally,  bleh! I'm still not satisfied with this... (will I ever be?) I'll be tinkering with this forever, until it is perfect... or I wither away!

I like it just the way it is. I don't think you should change another comma.

Very well done, and a wonderful tribute to a lovely woman.

yes, I've been constantly making changes, minor ones now, a comma here, a space there... I left a post on her fan page, let's see if she sees this and leaves a comment... (fat chance, but a chance nevertheless!)

I think you have taken on a difficult task. Satisfying yourself. It is definitely a good poem. This tribute is worthy I think. If you tinker more with it before judging, let me know and I will take another look. I think the lyric explanation was wise for those of us who know no French.

this says so much more than it appears to say. the dedication is phenomonal in these skaters. i am sorry to know she bowed out of this year's olympics. she has worked so very hard. a very didicated, determined young lady who should see this beautiful poem you have written. viyanna

Well, purple, Kwan did a short program called 'Dream of Desdemona' where she 'played' Desdemona, the ill-fated wife of Othello, so you are correct in your Shakespear reference!

    Moving

A moving piece It's a shame she didn't get to do the compition. I guess the Golden Dragon wasn't destened to be a good luck piece after all.I was on a brake at work when we heared that she had withdrawen and a couple of people actually cried.

"graced in artistry dreams of desdemona"--shakespeare's? That is the only famous one I'm aware of. In which case, I'm a little unsure as to how this part relates to the rest of it. I did think the piece was well-researched and very moving. It's sad that she withdrew at the last minute.

"Sont des mots qui vont très bien ensemble"
translates to "My beauty, these are words that go together well."
The phrase is from the Beatle's song 'Michelle', after which Ms. Kwan's parents named her!

I'll add this bit of info to my author's comments...! I'll probably tinker with this piece some more...

Technically this poem is probably very good, I think. I'd have been lost without the explanation in the author's comments. I recognize the Beatle lyrics, but I don't know what the French means. I've always wondered. If you would translate it, I would appreciate it. Thanks very much for entering.
