The Fountain of Internal Youth

Missing image

As time goes by and we grow old
Mother Nature is exceedingly kind.
She wraps us lovingly in oblivion
As we withdraw into our mind.

The great glory of youth gradually fades away
As Death’s cold hand draws inexorably nearer.
Finally, our health and vigor begin to diminish
‘Til we don’t recognize ourselves in the mirror.

But then we begin to lose our vision as well
And every year, we need thicker eyeglasses
Until we can’t see anything and no longer care
How badly Father Time has kicked our asses.

Of course, the public at large can still see us
And they’ll say, “Wow, look at that old cuss.”
But we’ll be completely deaf by then, too,
So their insults will have no effect on us.

Finally, our heads become our own private universe
Full of thoughts and memories just floating around
Freed from the chains fastened so tightly to flesh;
Chains that tethered our young souls to the ground.

The chains are called Beauty and Handsomeness.
They’re fired by Ego, which thrives on consumption.
A blessing and a curse, they usually must be taken
Before one can mature with character and gumption.

It is said that youth is wasted on the young
And though the young may not think it fair,
It’s true – most must usually sacrifice much
Before they earn the freedom not to care.

Eternal youth has been sought by many.
But has any soul ever found it?  Never!
Time will wilt and yellow every bloom.
To seek internal youth is far more clever.

Awake!  You need not wait until you’re old!
The keys to the kingdom can be yours today
If you can see past the skin to the soul within
Before all you think you are is swept away.

So much emphasis is placed on what we wear, what weight we are, what we eat, what we drink, what we say, who we know, it's a wonder we have time to live at all.I say forget all that and be true to yourself.Enjoy every second. It will be all over before you know it.A wise write my friend, Ros

Thats a true insight i never paid enough notice to, being chained by our beauty, and handsomeness. Then again locked away by our pride or jealousy, or both. Keep the positiveness going up, there is so much already on your starter page, I hope everyone thats seen any of your work has seen some of the content above. Take care

    Hi Sharon,

I'm sure you have always been the kind of person who sees past the surface. Most poets do, so I'm preaching to the choir on this one. As with most poetry, the people who most need to read it never will. The only way to reach them is to slip subliminal messages into vacuous sitcoms, cosmetics infomercials and action films. lol

    Thanks!

    Mark

    Dragon,

    That's a great compliment from a guy:

    - who fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.

    - whose face could make a train take a dirt road.

    - who only gets any girls at all because of who he is as a person - a rapist.

    - who couldn't get laid at a women's prison with a handful of pardons.

Don't mince words with me, boy!

By the way, I didn't want to embarrass you the other day but there was a little dab of dried Gerbers baby food on your chin. hahahahahahahahahaha

    Awaiting your next volley. lol

Mark...you didn't have to write a poem. We all know you are old and ugly. Time wasn't kind to you. LoL!!!!! (Hopefully this hits the fan! lol!)

THis was very good. It makes me think. I am not sure to what level it applies but I have long since learned to look beyond the skin, I learned it because I was always wishing people would do more than just look at me and judge me. I was a fat kid who wore black and smoked. What more did they need to know? No one ever realized when I was younger and still to this day that I would do anything for anyone if they needed me to. I have always been a poet at heart but all that mattered was that I wasn't into modern things and popular clothes....But at any rate before I go back in time again I'm gonna say great write and I am glad that you write like you do. I am constantly made to give an emotional response to almost everything you write......

I went to the Mall recently and I felt terribly old. I remembered a time when I didn't always know better and all I wanted was to wear the latest style and fit in... no matter if it was appropriate or not.

A guy I love taught me the basics of enjoying life:
-Making out at the movies at least once in your life.
-Having someone you love and who loves you too... unconditionally, take all your clothes off!
-Eating till you're full (but not bursting)
    - Falling asleep thinking about something that makes you smile silently (especially if it made someone else's day).
-Sending random loveletters in the middle of the night (knowing that special someone is checking their mail excitedly for them!)
    -Daring to dream
-Learning to say goodbye (Haven't mastered this one yet!)
    -Embracing the power of forgiveness.

"If you can see past the skin to the soul within
Before all you think you are is swept away" YUP! I learned that one early. I don't know how much it's worth though, considering most people refuse to be taught that! And I gotta live with them

    Great write Mark!

    Marissa.
