The telephone rings
And with shaky hands
I answer, "Yes?"
A kind female voice
on the other line
says, barely audibly,
"We have your results..."
My heart pounds, my hands shake
"Yes?"
"You... are..."
She draws out her words
And I know the answer's bad
"Positive"
I drop the phone
I'm going to die...
I can't believe
That one wild night has killed me.
All I remember
Is sinking to the floor
My life is waste, I thought
And started to cry
I called my mother, called my pa
Called my brother and best friends.
I asked them what to do
And they told me
To Live... live like I was dying
"Appreciate every day
Play in the snow
Stay in bed late
Dance in the yard"
"Accept your fate"
They said through tears
"And enjoy the rest of your time"
So living, I am
And when I die
They'll remember
My peace and bliss
Not my mistakes and faults
And with shaky hands
I answer, "Yes?"
A kind female voice
on the other line
says, barely audibly,
"We have your results..."
My heart pounds, my hands shake
"Yes?"
"You... are..."
She draws out her words
And I know the answer's bad
"Positive"

I'm going to die...
I can't believe
That one wild night has killed me.
All I remember

Called my brother and best friends.

Author notes
My heart goes out to the people who live with disease every day of their life. I am so sorry that you have to deal with it, and you are so strong for it as well. I wear a red ribbon, but pray to the deities that I never have to live with it.
