One evening in summer I went for a stroll
Along the green banks of a creek
I came to a seat and as I had a rest
I heard a voice suddenly speak.
I looked all around for this aerial sound
But nobody round did I see
When purely by chance I directed my eyes
To the ground and o! What could that be?
A small, tiny mouse and a Junjarin bright
Were making their way to the water
The Junjarin guided their pattering steps
Ensuring the mouse didn't falter
They both reached the edge and I rose from my seat
To see what the next step would be
When out of the depths sprang a Lalagulli blue
A nymph so familiar to me.
The two bushland nymphs were then joined by another
And this time my eyes were beholden
Of a Moora Moora sprite so laughing and gay
His clothing a radiant golden
This new little nymph then went up to the others
And putting its arms round the mouse
Escorted the beast to the front of the door
And entered the mousie's small house.
In the bat of an eye, they had all disappeared
And I stood, softly heaving a sigh
I wished to myself that I'd seen all these elves
Some other time, just passing by.
As I wandered away, on the frond of a fern
Near a tree, by me fully unseen
A Tintookie's soft smile guaranteed the next time
That I passed, he would answer my dream.
....................
We're Australian Junjarins (pronounced JUN jar ins)
Working hard with cheerful grins
Junjarins are good spirits and are the hardest working spirits in the bush. They make sure that the sick and helpless creatures have food, water and shelter. Their favourite job is to watch over the trees and flowers in the bush. They love helping the wildflower to open their petals and baby ferns to uncurl their light little fronds. Their grins are so bright, they are often taken for the rising sun.
....................
Lalagullis we delight (pronounced Lulla gullies)
In helping keep things clean and bright
Lalagullis are graceful, laughing water nymphs who help the streams and lakes to keep all things clean and bright. They see that the water-lilies and other water plants are refreshed with the clear, cool water. Their particular delight is to watch over the sleek, shiny platypus babies as they tumble and play in the sparkling waterways.
....................
We're Moora Mooras happy and bright (pronounced more-a more-a)
Trying hard to do what's right
The Moora Mooras are the good fairies who help all the creatures in the bush. Perhaps a bird has injured its wing; they bandage it and look after the little bird until it is better. They especially watch out for baby kangaroos who might have fallen out of their mother's pouch.
....................
We're Tintookies. What we do (pronounced tin TOO kies)
Is try to make your wish come true.
Tintookies are ground-dwelling spirits. They are extremely inquisitive, but their special interest is helping to make wishes come true when deserved. Nobody has ever seen a Tintookie, as they do their good deeds by stealth.
