When I was four (or maybe three)
Godmother gave a book to me,
The title (plain as A.B.C):
"I talk to God; God talks to me!"
And when they'd read that book with me,
I chattered to Him happily,
I thanked Him for each flower and tree
(Politely, too, with "Thou" and "Thee"!)
And firmly I believed that He
Was happy to talk back to me
(His voice was like the summer sea,
Where little waves plash merrily!)
Till Auntie Harriet from Leigh
Thought this "A charming sight to see!"
And gave a candy bar to me,
As "recompense for piety!"
Since then (although on bended knee
I pray at fast and jubilee
In all the proper formulae)
I never hear Him answer me!

Author notes
For those unfamiliar with the Thames estuary
LEIGH - (i.e. Leigh-on-Sea on the north bank) IS pronounced LEE..
And, for lovers of Charlotte Bronte, YES, the echo of Mr Brocklehurst is quite deliberate.

beautiful and full of spirit!

A lovely story written poetically. Your rhyme is consistant and you have used interesting rhyme words such as "jubilee, piety and formulea" which breaks up the one syllable choice.
A superb write, thank you for your entry...alby

reminds me of Jesus saying, "Except you come as a little child, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven."
He later says, "My sheep know my voice" Which often troubles me... I have definitely heard it; but I find it takes a forgiving heart and more time to listen then I have. Maybe insisting on that time... would show more about my heart? -
this was absolutely adorible. fun to read. and i could imagine every line happening

Yes, this is a fun little romp into frivolity. Fun to read such as this, and the rhyme scheme held up quite nicely.

This was so cute. I great little childhood story and basically perfect monorhyme. One of the few I've seen in the contest so far. I loved it and the happy feeling you communicated to the reader.
Excellent.
