I Wrote A Letter To My Love...

I wrote a letter to my son today –
I’ve done it many times before.
It’s not to give him right away…

I wrote of how we love him,
Our wishes and our dreams.
I wrote my “Ten Commandments”
Among many other things.

We always say I love you.
We always kiss goodnight,
But I feel that all these letters
Are something I should write.

I started when I was pregnant
Just to let him know,
That even though he wasn’t “here”
That we both love him so.

I write them as he’s growing,
About the funny things he does.
The stories that he tells me
The toys and music that he loves.

For when I’m old and ailing.
Or when I’m no longer there.
He’ll always have my letters,
To know how much I care.

Author notes

Do we always say what needs to be said to our children?
Do we leave behind a legacy of love and words that they will adhere to?
We could be gone today, tomorrow, many years from now, but why wait for them to know?
Write a letter.  Write many letters as they are growing – cover all bases, give them something in addition to beautiful memories to look back on.  They could be young and you could be gone…  Don’t take tomorrow for granted.  Don’t take your love for your children (or their love for you) for granted.  Write a letter.

This is beautiful. When I forst clicked on it o thought it would be from you to your lover. But to write to your child.
It was great, and I didn't see it coming.
Your right we Don't always say what needs to be said to our children. Nice work and thank you for sharing.

This is a little too short for my liking, but it's still a fine piece of work. The beautiful feelings of love you have for this child of yours bring a tear to the eye and inspire a ton of love and happiness. You might like one of mine called, "The Line." I don't know how to do the url thing yet. Good job! - oce

A poem many will apreciate- especially mother

I know it's cliche, but "awwww!"

And highly thoughtful and original, the way you immortalise your love, through letters. Very touching.

I love good feeling poems like this.

I'm interested why you chose to write three lines for the first stanza and continued with four each for the remaining.

The dulcet sentiments in this cannot be matched, the rhyming is well done, and it finshes reading as a well-thought-out very commendable work

A sweet idea to be shared with many who see their offspring drifiting away. The random meter is a bit distracting but could be easily tweeked. (ie,) Stanza 5, line 4 would flow easier if you detelted the word, "that," and also the last line last stanza. Since you are speaking of event to occur after your demise, the word care should be in the past tense, 'cared.' Hope this helps a tad.

This is true poetic beauty in it's most incredible form. Writing letters to your son so that no matter what happens . . . he will always know how much you loved and cared for him . . . is a wonderful idea. This piece oozes love and compassion . . . and family togetherness. All I can say is . . . I wish my mother were like this . . . Don't ever let things get the way my family has . . . don't ever let your son hate you . . . the way that I hate my mother . . . because I promise you . . . you'll never be able to live and cope with it and neither will he . . . and you will both spend the rest of your lives wishing you could just lvoe eachother and never being able to. Great write. Veri touching.

Thank you all for your support of this poem and the idea behind it. We owe it to our kids to leave them with lasting, loving memories and this is one of many ways - beyond our words and actions - to do so. You have all be so very kind to comment. Thank you all...

    Wonderful!

This is absolutely awesome! I really love this. I have two little girls, and my oldest and I write back and forth, especially on days that are tough for her. Critically speaking, the only thing I would add, is one more line in the first stanza, it just seems a bit uneven in the beginning,- But that's just my opinion. A worthwhile read here. I am glad I clicked! - Rainydaywoman

One of those things that made me think "awww..."
    The only thing I might say is, the fact that the first stanza has only three lines, while the rest have four seems a little awkward. I hope you don't take that the wrong way though. I really enjoyed reading it...Thanks ^^;

Amazing and wonderful. This poem is great it shows so much in the writer itself. You show compassion and such love for your child/ren. If every mother could show that same compassion then they would feel wanted and loved. Parents in todays society have so many things on thier plates that it is sometimes really hard to spend equal amount of time with their children. I loved this poem and want to congratulate you on a well planned out poem. Keep up the great work and I am looking forward to reading more from you real soon

This is so amazing both in poetic beauty and an amazing heartfelt idea.
I can think of nothing better that would help a grieving person than reading letters from a loved one. Something they can cherish which reminds them of all the good times they shared and all the love they had for each other.

    Awesome Poem

this was a very beautiful heartwarming piece which seemed to be dripping with love!!

I thought the rhyming was also perfect...it's not all poets who can rhyme so beautifully...somehow i seem to be bised towards rhyming poetry so i liked this one a lot

    My favourite lines were

"I started when I was pregnant
    Just to let him know,
That even though he wasn’t “here”
That we both love him so."

I would have a been a grateful child if i had recieved such letters...infact i thought when i have kidz of my own...i'd do something similar!!

    Thanx for sharing this

Oh wow Scotlass, this was simply divine, it really was - and the idea behind it is so gorgeous, it reminded me of Cecilia Aherns book Ps I Love You, which I cherish as I absolutely love it - and like with her husband writing her notes, this is leaving a different kind of legacy behind - Bravo!

This is such a beautiful poem and is very inspirational. It seems that you have a lot of love for your son, but you don't quite know how you can tell him how special he is to you. All-in-all i think this is a wonderful write and well-scripted too.

Another great one by Scotlass!! this was truly inspirational...as part of my baby shower, we asked family to write to my daughter, their wishes for her future, etc..she is now 2 years old, and i continue to write to her, i have a journal just for her, and everything she does is in that journal. I appreciate the love that flows from your writing...if only every parent was like you, how wonderful this world would be...if only.

wow, this is a beautiful idea- One I will use when we have children (not far off, planning now!) My grandmother recently passed away, and sorting through all her stuff we found all the letters, cards and pictures from all her friends and family. they are now going back to whoever sent them, It has been so nice to read through things I wrote when I could only just write, and to know that she treasured them all these years..........no words can describe hat!
I'm sure that is how your children will feel too! 's

Oh how sweet. Lovely write. My father sure does not take our love for granted. He writes us girls poems about when we were young and watching us grow up. I have done the same for him. I have written him one that told him even after I'm married and moved out I will still be his little girl.
My mother as well tells me everyday, we are a very close nit family.

    Tearness!

This was beautiful poem. I loved every word of it. So thoughtful and genuine. Its somewhat funny that I came across this because I saw on Dr. Phil an episode where a mom was dying but her daughter was just a baby practically. And so intead of wallowing and missing out on all the big events with her daughter, she made videos. Everyday i believe of little advice tips and messages, telling her how much she loved and missed her...it got me all choked up because she would cry and be emotional sometimes. The little girl was 13-14 on the show and shed had the videos for a few years already..and theres hundreds more she hasent seen yet...
This poem had me all choked up too. lol ::sniff::
Great, GREAT write. Ill be reading more soon enough!
Take care, and thank you for sharing...it was beautiful!

This a beautiful idea and a beautiful poem , I echo your thoughts entirely , I would add try and keep recordings of their laughter , their school shows , them reciting a poem or singing , and leave them your voice , this idea came to me when a loved one asked what I would like to be left in their will , I wanted nothing of monetry value , but I knew I would miss their voice ...so I asked for a tape of themself reciting whatever they wanted , anyhow , loved your sweet poem !
