The Elf-maiden

Gliding as though on slippers made from moonbeams,
All gowned in forest-green and subtly-threaded gold,
An elf-maiden, unknown to the last few dwellers in Lorien,
Came seeking, seeking, ever seeking for her love.

She came to you, laid one hand on your breast, the other
She placed above her own heart. Then she smiled, contented.
“Yaniluie!” said she, which in her tongue is, “I have found her!”
And in your own heart you knew that this was truth indeed.

She stayed. She knew your love. Each day you both drank
At each other’s perfumed well, as sunlit leaves danced.
And when it became time for the fragments of the elven race
To leave their forest sanctuary, you and she chose to remain.

The magic left the forest, and your choice was mortality.
But what elven enchantment had been stripped was replaced
By the magic of your love, and enchantment of its own!
The two of you have taught the forest some new ways.

The mallorn tree now, surprised in autumn, sheds its leaves,
Dies to naught, rebirths joyfully in spring! Birds fend,
Creatures have learned the hunt! But you and she –
What magic! – have learned to love each other’s ageing!

I did love whimsey - C S Lewis and so on - but even as a child I seemed to need it to have an edge, a quirk, something to lift it out of the realm of the traditional fairy tale. Thank you for your praise.

I'm glad to see another elegant poem by you! By any chance, did you grow up reading all the lovely fantasy in the forest kinds of books?

Took the very words from my thoughts. Very sweet...dont think I know either of them. Spreading pixie dust and magic, even before being pixified.

...from an enchantress, were you about to say? Thank you Jilli. I wrote it for Elbereth at melswebs, before she had met her beloved Leguan - see, I knew it would come true for her!

    excellent

I love this Mb...different from your normal writing, however carrying still the grace and power of your words. Quite enchanting, but what else could I have expected?

Thank you. It was written for someone, to give them hope that their life-partner would turn up. It came true!
