To Celestine

It is not long since fair Celestine and I
became a couple in the accepted sense
and she taught me that all the darkest berries
are sweet to my taste.

My world with her has been one of diff’rent tastes
a moment-to-moment journey of delight
a discovery of love’s deeper meaning
and a playful game.

Now she has gone a-travelling and no more
is my head couched on the comfort of her breasts
what pleasure is there in the mere memory
of tastes and flavours?

So here I sit and savour one I made mine
from the bite of coffee and the warm caress
of chocolate swirling in a china mug
in blissful marriage.

A hood of steamed milk froths above the blending
with raw freckles of chocolate melting there
and staining it with umber criss-crosses
like a brown tartan.

The froth is a kiss that beguiles with coolness
before the lip scalds on the brew beneath it
and the delicious steam tickles my nostrils
almost to sneezing.

Oh yes – that first bite of lava-hot coffee
is Celestine’s first bite upon my shoulder
and the after-taste the warmth of mine on hers –
now I remember!

To drain the cup slowly while it is still warm
and then to sit and swill the cold dregs around
lost in reverie, licking froth from my lips
as an afterthought.

How hard it is to set down the cup and leave.
So shall I tell the waiter “Bring me one more,
for I would drink my dear Celestine again,
time is no matter”?

Celestine, where are you now? Do you have time
to take your leisure? Sit, let them bring to you
this drink which I have made your own libation
all in your honour.

Drink and enjoy; and darling when you taste it
remember your sad and faithful girlfriend here.
Look up from your cup and in your mind’s eye see
me looking at you!

Thank you, John. It's one of a series of poems from a time when I was particularly creative. I think it works.

Coffee and love put together. Nice.

    "raw freckles of chocolate"

This was one heck of an image, particularly for someone in love with chocolate and poetry!

I can't forget this "umber criss-crosses like a brown tartan" and today was looking for it in my cup but found concentric rings instead, because I had drunk it slowly for a change. LOL.

    excellent

Marvelous, Mairi. A really flavorful poem to savor. I like Chai tea, myself. By the way, have you seen the contest by ea on coffee. She wants to put the winning entries in a coffee poem book she is publishing. She's got some wild ideas. I'm not sure if it is a contest allowing pre-writes, but this wonderful poem of your fits so well that I'm sure you could work something out.

    Keep up the wonderful works,

As it happens, Celestine and I have, since then, spent a lot of time in each other's company. I am glad you enjoyed the poem.

SO sweetly done. I hope that if this is a reality that the coffee will once more be tasted. I dont think I could have done this better.
