Princess Shahrzad (Acrostic Lento)

Princess Shahrzad (Acrostic Lento)

Showing all that she's a princess,
Holding readers with her rhymes,
Amazing with words like flowers,
Hinting us to ancient times...

Reading all the words of her friends,
Zapping with her sharp critique,
Adoring in her sweet comments,
Drawing new friends with technique.

Author notes

I made this acrostic Lento for my friend Shahrzad Maftooh, which I hope appreciate this poem. In a Lento, the rule is that first word should rhyme in every line, and the last word of 2nd and 4th line of every stanza should rhyme, otherwise it's pretty freeform... In an acrostic, the first letter of each line make up a word or a name, in this case the first name of my friend. As far as I know, the image is the name Shahrzad in arabic, atleast I found it on a site where it said that it was. As far as I could find out, Shahrzad means born in the city . Considering the alternate ways of pronouncing Shahrazad is Scheherazade (source: Wikipedia) it proves that the name comes from the story One Thousand and One Nights , or Arabian Nights . She really is a princess!

This is an audio poem! Click on the title under the image to listen to me reading.

I came to this page from Shahrzad’s page. Actually she’s my AP sis and I love her and whomever she loves! She is indeed as sweet as sugar and her hugs is sent whenever they are needed.
By the way, you wrote a beautiful acrostic for her and I see she loved this as much as I did! Thank you for sharing with us

Hi, kidtriangle. Sorry, but there is not really place for more words in this form, which is very strict in the rules... I also like to write short and concise, so that I can get my meaning through with fewer words - redunant words are just meaningless. Thank you for your comment, though! Jim

Hi, Lencio! Thanks for reviewing my poem, and thanks for telling me it's still ok within the rules of the Lento. I felt I had to fix it, because when constricted to equal length lines, I had to sacrefice something, in this case the rhythm. Yes, you mentioned that you would have had difficulty judging the contest if I've entered this in the first round. I understand it could battle getsbetter's poem for the gold? Thank you for your wonderful comment, I really appreciate it! Jim

Yes, it is still good, unlike some of the Lentos which came in the first round of my contest, which eventually were improved. This is still fine. And did I say you would have made my judging difficult had you entered this in my first round? lol!!! You are one hell of a talented writer here. I am glad to have known you here.

    Be blessed,

    Lencio

    This is really good. . . . Though I'm not all that sure what a lento is;
The flow on this is amazing. You did a lot of inverted word phrases. In my English class we're finally getting to the good literature, and that is one of the things we covered today. . .
Not only is the poem written well and good quality, but the emotions in it are beautiful. Your friend is very lucky to have you

Hi, Bazza! I know this poem is not flowing "properly", but it's because it's sort of difficult to make it have good rhythm aswell as acrostic, rhyming first word, and 2nd/4th line in each stanza... Thanks for commenting and applauding this poem for the third time! Jim

    Sincerely written with much emotion.

Interesting, challenging, thought provoking, and lots of work, to come up with a novelty poem, but not flowing, although it reads well because of the beautiful sentiments you have expressed. A vivid dedication to Shahrzad that portrays you respect of a Friendship that has been building for quite some time, and now maturing. She is a sensitive and compassionate person and has many other pure and sincere attributes and deserves the praise for she tries so hard to be loved and gives so much love to every one else at the same time.

Hi, Charishma! Yes, I put some time into searching for the image with her name in arabic, and the meaning of her name, plus the referrence to 1001 Nights, but that's the sort of things you do for friends. This is my first Lento, but I've tried many forms, and this is not more difficult than other forms - so I decided to make it harder! I talked with Lecio, and he said that had I entered this into the contest, he would have difficulty judging the contest. Do you happen to know who won? Masterpiece Lento !

Wow! This is such a sweet gesture for your friend. Both imagery and Lento are fantastic! What hard work to search for the image, meaning of her name, etc. Your effort to create a masterpiece Lento shines right through this. I am sure Shahrzad appreciates this beyond words. She is lucky to be blessed with such a talented and creative friend. This is a beautiful Lento. I enjoyed the descriptive words used to describe what Shahrzad is like. The acrostic bit too is great. Beautiful work, Jim! I am finding it very hard to believe that this is your First Lento Had you entered Lencio's Lento Contest, you would have grabbed the GOLD right past the eyes of us other contestants!!!

Hi, sis! Me king? No, Bazza's the king, I'm merely a prince. Yes, the idea to combine the acrostic with the Lento came as I realized that both Shahrzad's name and the Lento's lines had the number eight. Problem was to find an "ing"-rhyming word starting with Z, and one making sense. Thank you for your wonderful comment, and your heartwarming applause, sis, I really appreciate it! Hugs to you and your husband! Jim

Jim, Oh my brother, you are a king and your words for the princess are beyond reproach. You never cease to AMAZE me, not afraid of trying any new form and then to add to that form by incorporating the acrostic with it. No sister could be more proud than I am to have you as my brother. You always make sunny day smile and as you know that warms the heart. I see how much Sharzad thought of this, as well as everyone else who has read it. Keep spreading your love and light, it always comes back to you. Thank you so much for sharing another masterpiece with all of us, you know I'm standing and cheering, hooting and hollering, etc. etc. etc... as I applaud you for this brilliant write.
