Steam Slowly Rising

The lazy drift of eyes      awaken me to the steady drum      of the day outside my window.

A indrawn breath      brings to my senses the smell of hazelnut,

heady and aromatic, begging for me to swallow it.

Steam rising to my face,      awareness slowly dawning.

Outside I hear      the buzz and rumble of my husband mowing the lawn,

nothing smells better than fresh cut grass.

Bringing to mind long summer days, children at play

and myself, fat and happy      in the heat of the sun.

based on the soft, pastoral piece Summer revisited
