The Willow

The Willow grows
Her roots deep
Into the soil
By the edge of the sea

The Willow weeps
for her drifting Alder
The Queen waits for her King
Who navigates waters.

The Willow will wait
For her King to no end
For the proud and majestic
Tall they stand

The strong, wide trunk
Planted by the sea
Her leaves hang over
E'er protecting me

My head lifts to the sky
As indecision flies
My unborn son
Will be named Kai.

Author notes

I have always loved the name Kai, but mostly I love the story behind it. It's origin is Hawaiian, and it means the willow by the sea.  In ancient times the tree "Alder" was said to be the king of the seas, and because the willow was planted by water, it was said to be his queen. The name Weeping Willow came from the fact the she was planted so close to the water and that she flourished in moist ground and the way her leaves hang downwards. The Willow is said to have magical uses. For example the bark was used as a pain reliever and was said to reduce fever and rheumatism. It was also used as a footbath.
