To The Lady At The Newstand

Missing image
by ~Gregg Rowe~

Her long blond hair
flows down her shoulders
innocent face
lightly blushed
enhances soft features
as I pass her by
on the way to the Metro

She glances up
from the newspaper that
she firmly holds in her hands
the flow of her black dress;
moulds her mystique
an aura of innocence

I am intrigued by colours
as I pass her by
her in her reality
I, in my fantasy

Author notes

Metro has a double meaning in Quebec.  It is the name of our underground subway system and at the same time a chain of grocery stores.  In Westmount Square , a up-scale prestigious, rich neighbourhood of Montréal, above the Metro Subway station is located also a Metro Grocery Store .  One morning on my way to work and stopping by the Metro Grocery store to pick up a lunch, I saw a lady in a black dress, reading a newspaper while waiting for the Metro.  I thought it was an intriguing sight at eight in the morning to see this vision of simplistic beauty in the way she was poised, reading while waiting.

Another striking part of the image was this softness of the young woman, with just the perfect amount of make-up applied, dressed in a black dress reading a newspaper which is generally printed in black and white.  As a photographer seeing this image, it became fixated in my mind until I could write it down.

Lovely observations in this poem. Audey Hepburn's picture does work well as an illustration for your words. She always seems like a piece of art in her fragile beauty and exquisite look of wide-eyed innocence. There is just something nearly indefineable in the disciplined posture that is so arresting.
Your lady at the newstand must have been very striking, too.

    Beatifully Done!

A visually appealing piece with a lovely description of the young woman. It's interesting how we keep images locked inside our minds eyes until we can release them on canvas or on paper. I see this scene often myself in N.Y city. Thanks for sharing a beautiful piece of Montreal with with this city slicker. Avril

I love the movie, I love Hepburn, loved the picture, lol, and the poem suits it very well. The last stanza is particularly striking in that it feels very personal to me on some level. I can definitely put myself in the poem, believe myself to be the object of the piece, and that's always the mark of an entertaining poem.
