Hugh Wyles' Seventyfourth

Missing image
Hugh Wyles' Seventyfourth

Another day in New Zealand,
Christchurch to be exact
And one of its fine citizens
Has gotten into the act

Since seventyfour years ago
When he chose this very day
To reach what would become for him
His seventyfourth birthday

It took precise calculation
To make it come out just right
For this to be his special day,
A man who makes our world bright

The day is here, the time is right
The candles, the cake adorn
He planned for this, his special day,
From the day that he was born

So come you quickly, one and all,
It’s more than he can handle
He needs all of our huff and puff
With each and every candle

From where I sit on this fine day
It’s only the day before
I think he planned so we’d be sure
To celebrate one day more

Give him lots of kisses and hugs
He loves hugs and slurpy smacks
Then we’ll celebrate some more
With seventyfour loving whacks!

Happy Birthday, Hugh !!!

With love and hugs

Author notes

Hugh's already celebrating his birthday since it's a day later in New Zealand, than it is here in the USA..January 13th, to our January 12th...but what the heck...we can all handle two days of celebrations ...I think

    Excellent Dee!

    I know Hugh and his operas, too
    That man can write, a pure delight
    When I read him I'm going to school
    Learning how to write poetry right

    Great job

    I don't know this young gentleman but you've done a great job with the poem and then it is nice how the other's joined in. I love it! Great job. Shancy.

    Lol... thanks, Margaret....you and Hugh, with your talented writing..(and with Hugh's nagging) have begun to make me more concious of my own form..and lack of it... I admire both yours and Hugh's poetry so much. I still love writing free form but I know I need to learn and practice others, too. Even though I've been writing poetry for about sixty years, ..(gawd, that sounds like a long time and though I used to at least write in rhyme, I've never before gotten into the 'form' thing..except Haiku, which I also love reading and writing.
    So I have a lot to learn and try

    I saw the link to this poem in the group, and am happy I came straight to here
    I like your sense of humour Dee, here you mixed it with lovely thoughts. It's a happy and amusing poem which fits so well into Hugh's personality.
    We are lucky to have him as friend, and he is lucky as well having so many people who care and write him excellent poems as this one

    Beautifully Penned for a man and messenger of

    Dearest catz,
    How I adore this lovely birthday wish.
    In your wit, wisdom and special tenderness.
    Hugh is a bright star in all our hearts.
    I’ve travelled near and far; he’s our northern star.
    A man of light who sings to us we’re all his sweethearts!
    One of the symbols of a birthday
    is a candle burning soft and bright,
    Our beloved Hugh R, in your
    tender and compassionate heart
    You work throughout time and space
    for the betterment of all humanity.
    May heavenly blessings rain on your
    Seventy Fourth birthday! Je’tadore!
    I wish you seventy-four and many more.
    May your beautiful sprit of love
    continue to rain upon all our shores!
    In love and eternal peace foremore.
    I longed to cast a spell for your birthday
    But I can’t remember what it was?
    Beauty…
    No your already have this rare kiss.
    Intelligence…
    No, you have that in buckets within
    I just want to thank you Hugh for being you.
    And in your precious heart of hope and light
    May you continue to inspire us in never ending delight!
    ~XXX Love, Hugs, Kisses, HAPPY BRITHDAY~

    I'm glad you approve,
    my dear friend Hugh
    tell me, is it so bad
    being as old as you?
    it just seems with all
    the birthday hurdles
    (at least you don't have
    to deal with girdles?)
    all the cakes and ice cream
    over the years
    'twould bring bulges,
    aches, pain and tears
    but so far I've found
    it's just bulges it brings
    and a nice warm feeling
    when everyone sings,
    happy birthday to you
    let's all have a drink
    as you enjoy your
    special day.... I think
    we keep looking forward
    to more and more
    aren't you gonna feel great
    when you reach a hundred and four

    Oops... this just kept going and going... but I think my battery just ran down....

    Happy Birthday

    Whack !!

    Dee

    Dear Dee, Bea, Margaret G, Terry, Renee,
    Mary6 (my other Sonnet Queen) and dear Maureen!
    ~~~
    Well, I am verily struck dumb; quite virtually overcome
    with all this spiel my senses reel, and yet I feel my bum is numb.
    For it is now 10.43 and I have sat too long you see
    when Edna's said "Come love to bed?" and I'm still stuck at my PC.
    But I can't just ignore, unseating, this combination birthday greeting
    First from my good friend, Aussie Bea and next from Arizona Dee
    who was my FF on AP (meaning "First Fave" I hope you see!)
    Even from one I do not know, whose AP name is "Mary O".
    Now Mary6 is on my list whom often I have "loved and kissed"
    but "Mary O" casts me adrift. (I'll have to check her out forthwith!)
    Well, thank you SO much, ALL my dears, I know my thanks are in arrears
    I wanted, to you ALL, to say: your words have made my whole birthday!
    ~~~
    (Not my best, but after three scotches it could have been worse!)
    Love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

    Dear Dee, your light and lovely humour are only exceeded by your rhymes and meter. Very well done, and a generous gesture.

    Congratulations to our leige,
    King Hugh has gained so much prestige
    that he can give each one of us
    applause, and even help discuss
    the merits of our writes and wrongs,
    the meter of our little songs.

    Our King has reached a super day,
    of which I'll comment, if I may,
    upon his reaching seventy-four,
    I hope he has as many more!
    So light the candles, blow them out,
    and Hail the Hugh we fuss about.

    First off; Catz-

    What a lovely poem to honor one of the most wonderful men on this site. Hugh has always been a blessing to me. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to wish him the happiest birthday ever.

    Hugh,

    God has granted you with three score, and ten plus four years. What a blessing. My mother just turned 73, and said she was humbled to be living over the allotted time. I can only pray that I see 23 more years to reach the age you have. Your wit, talent and wisdom is something that has always amazed me. I pray you have a splendid day filled with love, laughter, memories and joy.

    I love you dearly!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR HUGH
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

    God Bless & Keep YOU Always,

    Renee

    Well, happy birthday to you, kind Sir,
    What, is it only seventy-four? Defer,
    a youngster yet, compared to me!

    But that's all right, a happy thought,
    'Cause all is well, as well it ought,
    it's my only chance at supremacy.

    But that's not all, it just won't do--
    All best wishes, to our King Hugh!

    Terry
